At present the reservation has about 40 aurochses. Lithuanian books were secretly printed and brought to Lithuania from neighbouring countries Prussia and Latvia. Intellectuals carried the books by various secret means thus trying to avoid the Russian police persecutions. This museum is the only original wellpreserved house in Lithuania used for book smuggling during the period of 1864-1905. This is a museum in the old mill in Stultiškiai Village close to Upytė settlement. There you can make acquaintance with ancient Lithuanian equipment for flax sowing, pulling, combing and weaving. Distance from Vilnius: 215 km The name of Biržai was first mentioned in 1450. This is a place where people of seven different religious denominations peacefully have resided together for ages. From the 15 th century Biržai was an important trade point on the road from Riga to Vilnius and Moscow. The construction of a castle with bastions, ramparts, moat and drawbridge began on the banks of Širvena Lake in 1586. Today on the same site there is a recently reconstructed Palace of Duke Radvila. On the opposite bank of Širvena Lake there stands another residence of antiquity - the Astravas Palace with beautiful park around. The lovely Church of St. John the Baptist, completed in 1861, is noted for the unity of its interior and exterior shapes. Biržai is well known in Lithuania for its local small breweries and beer production of special taste. This beverage takes an important part in the town’s history. Specific feature of Biržai land is gypsum content and numerous underground rivers, caves and caverns. As a result, the land of this area is dotted with numerous sinkholes. Traditional handicrafts, household utensils and folk costumes can be seen at the Ethnographical Museum in Kupiškis. One of Lithuania’s most prominent architects, L.Stuoka-Gucevičius, was born in Kupiškis District. The reconstruction of Vilnius Cathedral is perhaps his most well known project. His name and the word “kiškis” (hare) were supposedly the basis for the name Rokiškis. In reality it was first known as a private estate in 1499. The latest owner of Rokiškis was Count Tyssenhausen, the initiator of a group of still standing buildings and the most beautiful Neo-Gothic church in Lithuania. Here you will find a collection of fine works by French, Belgian, Lithuanian, Polish, Australian and German artists. You can also visit the catacombs, where members of the illustrious Rokiškis families are buried. Rokiškis District surroundings are suitable for recreation and tourism. There are 99 lakes in it and a part of the picturesque Sartai Regional Park belongs to the district. Tourists may be attracted by a number of cultural and historical monuments, such as Rokiškis Church, its Old Town, Salos Manor and Kamajai Church. It consists of 16 premises. The territory of the park of the museum covers 28,1ha. The museum is rich in imageries, woodcarvings of L.Sepka and expositions of folk art.
