Žagarė celebrated its 800 th anniversary in
1999, and consists of two parts, named
Old and New Žagarė. The old part has
been declared a State preserved urban
monument, and contains a manor
with English style park built in the 19 th
century. The Regional Park was set up to
preserve the landscape of the Svėtė river
sub valleys, Žagarė forest and architectural
monument of the Žagarė Manor.

Distance Pakruojis -Vilnius: 196 km
Pakruojis is Žiemgala land, the land of
windmills, fertile plains and valuable
cultural monuments. Pakruojis Manor
House was first mentioned in 1531.The
Manor is a cultural monument of state
importance. Manor buildings, which
were started to build by the initiative
and funding of the baron Vilhelm fon
der Ropp, can still be found there.
43 buildings built of local material
– dolomite – are still there. Cultural
events and exhibitions are held in the
Manor. There is an English style park
at the Manor House. The two-stored
arched bridge (1821) is an especially
unique building of late Classicism
epoch; it is more than 180 years old.
Petrašiūnai settlement: there was an
old railway junction there, therefore
the railway station is considered to be a
cultural object. Linkuva is a monument
to architecture; it is one of the most
interesting towns in the northern
Lithuania. In the centre of the town
there are small redbrick houses of former
armourers and bakers. Linkuva
St. Mary Schapler Church (1606)
shines in the sun on Linkuva Hill. The
church shapes are laconic. It has typical
Renaissance features. Few kilometres
away from Linkuva near the river Mūša,
in Veselkiškiai, one can visit memorial
homestead of composer Juozas Pakalnis.
Žeimelis is one of the oldest towns in the
country. There is a Žiemgala museum in
Mažoji Karčema, which has about 4000
exhibits and which reflect Žiemgala
land archaeology, ethnography, customs
as well as traditions. There are more
breweries in this area than anywhere
else in Šiauliai Region, starting from the
ancient ethnographic ones and ending
with the modern ones, which produce
beer. Small breweries usually produce
beer according to the recipes of their
ancestors and following old traditions.
They faithfully follow „live“ barely malt
beer production traditions. One can
visit the brewers of the land famous for
its beer.
A new attraction for tourists is the
tradition of hunting young crows, cooking
and eating them. An original and
unique humour, beer and crows festivals
are organized annually in August in Pakruojis,
HAV state capital.
