Distance Šilutė – Vilnius: 289km
Šilutė is located 45 km Southeast of
Klaipėda. Until 1923 it was under
German rule and was called Heydekrug.
Šilutė was formed from three villages
locaed halfway between Klaipeda and
Tilžė (Tilsit). In the 16 th century tradesmen
began clustering in the area, local
markets drew merchants from Klaipėda,
Tilžė and Konigsberg. When Klaipėda
railroad was completed in 1875, its
commerce with German cities expanded
considerably.
After centuries of German rule Šilute
was rejoined to Lithuania in 1923. It
prospered as a market town. A bilingual
culture and education was adopted in
that period. Two Lutheran Evangelical
churches and one Catholic Church respectively
served religious needs.
Rusnė is one of the oldest settlements
founded on the Nemunas delta in the
15 th century. The year 1419 is marked
on the weathercock on the tower
of Rusnė church. Rusnė is the only
Lithuanian town situated on an island.
Old fishermen traditions are revived in
the town, a traditional sailing boat of
Rusnė fishermen has been built according
to old drawings. A small church after
restoration, an old post office, a typical
fisherman’s farmstead, Uostadvaris lighthouse
(1876), and the first water-lifting
station(1907) can be recommended as
the places for sightseeing.
Ventės Cape is the farthest western
point of Šilutė District. A lighthouse at
the tip of the Cape has been operating
for more that 100 years (1863). In 1929
professor Tadas Ivanauskas established a
bird-ringing station in Ventė. The birds
caught in seven traps and ringed there
can later be discovered in Iran, Egypt,
and even in SAR. There is a museum in
Ventės Cape Ornithological Station.
The village of Mingė (Minija) – so called
Lithuanian Venice – is situated nearby
Ventės Cape at the Minija River. Mingė
is located on both banks of the river and
the only way to get to the other bank is
by boat.
