The dual effects of the Russian-Swedish War and plague at the beginning of the 18 th century reduced the area to a mere backwater. However, since the independence of 1918, the area has seen somewhat of a revival in its earlier fortunes. Perhaps of most interest to a modern traveller are the Kleboniškių Open-Air Ethnographic Museum, Burbiškės Manor-Museum and the Šeduva Windmill. Exhibits on display inside show farmers’ housekeeping of that period. A rich collection of old farming implements has been accumulated. This is a real hands-on museum, and vistors can, if they wish, get involved into ancient jobs such as milling the grain, baking the bread and weaving the linen. First mentioned in the 17 th century, this manor house is famous for its historical ensemble and the design of the surrounding landscape, including impressive reservoirs, islands and small bridges. The museum is also proud of the tulip collection featuring over 400 plants. It’s also possible to spend the night here. District territory: 844 sq km District population: 33.3 thous Getting there: by bus from Šiauliai, Mažeikiai Distance Šiauliai-Vilnius: 306 km Akmenė District is located on the watershed of the Venta River and its tributaries –Dabikinė, Virvytė and Vadakstis. There are huge resources of calk-stone used in production of lime and cement. These main Lithuanian natural resources have greatly influenced the economical development of Akmenė District.
The district boasts the wonderful Kamanos Nature Reserve prepared for sightseeing. There are nice local museums of Simonas Daukantas, famous Lithuanian writer, S. Adomaitis, folk artist, Museum of Handicrafts, Akmenė Land Muneum and V. Čiapas Botanical Garden established and maintained with particular attention and love. The reserve covers an area of 6464 hectares. More than 330 species of plants, animals and birds are found in the Kamanos Reserve. Some of them are included into the Red Book of Lithuania. The centre of the swamp is 6 meters above the area, but it includes 6 hectare lake, 12 quagmires and 7 quagmire rivers. Ventos Regioninis Parkas Dariaus ir Gireno 2. This park stands out for its landscape by Venta, Virvytė, Dabikinė, Uagis and Avižlis rivers and rivules, which form convenient conditions for water tourism. The landscape reserve of the park preserves a picturesque valley formed by erosions as well as complexes of fossil fauna of Jurassic period in exposures. QUARRIES Tourists and visitors enjoy visiting the plant of cement as well as impressive quarries of chalk-stone and clay. Deep and unlovely pits feature artificial lakes, which enliven the monotonous landscape of Northern Lithuania. The famous Hansa trade road that links Tilsit with Riga also crosses Joniškis. Its origin is related to Sidabre – Žiemgaliai Castle, which appears in the historical sources as early as 1289. In 1523, Vilnius Bishop John while visiting the Šiauliai District border came across with local pagans. According to his order a new church was built, thus giving the area name of Joniškis in honour of the Bishop. King Sigismundus Vasa granted Joniškis the Magdeburg Rights in 1616. The town thus acquired a new economic and juridical status, with a permission to build the town hall. Meanwhile Joniškis grew to become the largest town of Šiauliai economy, by far exceeding the economy’s centre itself. In the centre of Joniškis is a monument of urban architecture.
