16 The Health Bulletin January, 1955of Delegates by Dr. Dwight D. Murrayof Napa, Calif., chairman of the Boardof Trustees. Dr. Pace completed thefirst two years of his medical trainingat the University of North Carolinaand then went to Philadelphia, wherehe received the degree of doctor ofmedicine from Jefferson Medical Collegein 1914. After an internship atGouverneur Hospital in New York Cityand at Nassau Hospital in Mineola,N. Y., he returned to North Carolinain 1916 and began a career that hasbeen devoted to helping his fellow menand to the betterment of his profession.Dr. Pace was a leader in the reorganizationof the Pitt County Medical Society,a president of the Tri-StateMedical Society, and for six years amember of the North Carolina Boardof Medical Examiners and is a memberof the Seaboard Medical Society,the American Academy of GeneralPractice, the Medical Society of theState of North Carolina, and theAmerican Medical Association and headof the Atlantic Coast Line SurgeonsAssociation. He was a member also ofthe original committee to reorganizethe medical college of the Universityof North Carolina, which led to theestablishment of a four year medicalschool in his state. He, with threeother physicians, led a movement manyyears ago to build the first hospital inPitt County, for which all four physiciansmortaged their homes and borrowedmoney on their insurances andother valuables. In 1920 Dr. Pace startedthe first venereal disease clinic in NorthCarolina. His civic activities includedirectorship with the Boy Scouts, theRed Cross, the chamber of commerce,and a bank. He was chairman of theGreenville Utilities Commission foryears, president of the Greenville RotaryClub, and an organizer of theGreenville American Legion Post andof the Pitt County Executives Club.He has been chairman of the financecommittee of the Jar vis MemorialMethodist Church for 25 years andactive in the work of the CommunityChest and the March of Dimes campaignof the National Foundation forInfantile Paralysis. Dr. Pace has threesons, two of whom are physicians,while the third recently completed thesenior year at the University of NorthCarolina. When earlier this year, hewas selected by the Medical Society ofthe State of North Carolina as thegeneral practitioner of the year, themayor of Greenville said, "He is lovedand respected by the rich and pooralike as he has unstintingly given ofhimself to all who have called uponhim not only for medical treatmentbut for business and spiritual assistancein times of need. Although busy dayand night with the practice of his medicalprofession he has somehow beenable to find the time to be outstandingin almost every important civic endeavorof this city." His type of serviceis described also by a colleaguewho said, "In spite of the enormousdemands made upon his time andstrength by virtue of his professional,religious, and civic activities, Dr. Pacehas never become too busy to stopand listen to people's troubles and totry to help in solving their problemsthrough sympathetic counsel, encouragementand financial aid."The Annual General Practitioner'sAward of the American Medical Associationhas been awarded to sevenother physicians since it was first givenin 1948. They are Archer ChesterSudan, Kremmling, Colo.; the lateWilliam L. Pressly, Due West, S. C;Andy Hall, Mount Vernon, 111.; thelate Dean Sherwood Luce, Canton,Mass.; Albert C. Yoder, Goshen, Ind.;John M. Travis, Jacksonville, Texas;and Joseph I. Greenwell, New Haven,Ky.
