St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong><strong>The</strong> wider recognition <strong>of</strong> the importance<strong>of</strong> home and farm accidentsas a health problem has focused particular<strong>at</strong>tention on those de<strong>at</strong>hs in thehome resulting from poisonous solids,liquids and gases. Since the incidence<strong>of</strong> such accidental de<strong>at</strong>hs is five timeshigher in children under five years <strong>of</strong>age than in other age groups, de<strong>at</strong>hsfrom poisons are <strong>of</strong> paramount interestto pedi<strong>at</strong>ricians, general practitionersand public health workers. Of furtherimportance is the fact th<strong>at</strong> studiesshow five out <strong>of</strong> six poison de<strong>at</strong>hs occurin the home, still considered by manyas the safest place on earth.Bain, in a recent review, has pointedout th<strong>at</strong> the de<strong>at</strong>h r<strong>at</strong>e from this causein the United St<strong>at</strong>es is four times th<strong>at</strong><strong>of</strong> the British r<strong>at</strong>e and th<strong>at</strong> twelvesouthern st<strong>at</strong>es have a de<strong>at</strong>h r<strong>at</strong>e fromaccidental ingestion <strong>of</strong> poisoning twiceth<strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong> the United St<strong>at</strong>es.*In children under five years <strong>of</strong> agein the entire United St<strong>at</strong>es, the de<strong>at</strong>hr<strong>at</strong>e from poison accidents is 2.6 per100,000 based on a two-year sample,1949 and 1950. During a correspondingperiod, the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> de<strong>at</strong>h r<strong>at</strong>ein the same age group was 4.2 per100,000. Figures just released for theyear 1953 indic<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> in <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>twenty-one de<strong>at</strong>hs occurred amongchildren under five years <strong>of</strong> age frompoison accidents. <strong>The</strong> 1953 r<strong>at</strong>e alsois 4.2 per 100,000 in this age group.Accidental de<strong>at</strong>hs from poisons accountedfor about five and one-halfper cent <strong>of</strong> the 1,034 non-motor vehicleaccident de<strong>at</strong>hs in <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> in1953, with this cause having been listedas the cause <strong>of</strong> de<strong>at</strong>h on fifty-ninecertific<strong>at</strong>es. Forty-nine <strong>of</strong> these de<strong>at</strong>hsoccurred either in a home or on afarm.A review has been made <strong>of</strong> thepoison de<strong>at</strong>hs to deline<strong>at</strong>e possibleepidemiological factors concerned intheir caus<strong>at</strong>ion and to discover possibleavenues along which one may approachthe control <strong>of</strong> such de<strong>at</strong>hs.Of the 59, a total <strong>of</strong> 16 de<strong>at</strong>hs werelisted as resulting from drinking beveragealcohol or an alcohol containingproducts such as a paint diluent, solventor commercial prepar<strong>at</strong>ion em-
