For parents of children aged:Up to 19yrsSpeakeasyWhat is this programme?The Speakeasy programme is an accredited course, which gives parents and carerspractical advice and training on how to chat openly about sex and relationships withchildren. The course offers a flexible and relaxed way to gain greater confidence inan area that can cause embarrassment and awkwardness <strong>for</strong> parents and carers.The course can be an eight week course, with accreditation if parents wish, or thedifferent elements can be offered as individual sessions to look at any specific issuesraised during the on-going support of parents and carers.Where are the programmes delivered?The following organisations have people trained to run Speakeasy courses <strong>for</strong>parents and currently are able to offer courses to those who use their services.• Hartcliffe and Withywood Teenage Parent Project: 0117 978 4401;• SPAN: 0117 951 4231• Young Mothers’ Group Trust: 0117 954 0020Content of the programme:The courses have specific learning outcomes, but the structure and content of thecourse are needs-led in order to satisfy the particular requirements of each group.Creative methods are used within the groups including collage and artwork, role-playand games as well as more traditional written work <strong>for</strong> those who wish.Typical Session Details:Week 1Week 2Week 3Week 4Week 5Week 6Week 7Week 8Introductions, Ground Rules, Fears, Hopes and Expectations.Understand the changes boys and girls undergo at puberty.Understand what sex education means in the contact of family life.Understand how to respond to the needs of children in relation to sexand relationships education in the context of family life.Understand social and cultural attitudes towards sex and sexuality asthey relate to children including stereotypes found in the media andoutside pressures upon young people.Understand the different methods of contraception that are available.Understand the different sexually transmitted infections and methods<strong>for</strong> safer sex.Understand strategies <strong>for</strong> keeping children safe from harm.Understand sex and relationships education in schools, taking accountof statutory and non-statutory guidance in education.How it can be accessed:From April 2009 four more organisations will be able to offer courses within their ownorganisations. Plans are underway to train more professionals to be able to offershortened versions of the full Speakeasy course, and to increase their confidence tosupport parents and carers in one-to-one work, with issues relating to growing up,relationships and sexual health.
