For women who are pregnant andparents of: 0 - <strong>School</strong> leaversHealth professionals who provide parentingsupport servicesCommunity MidwiferyWomen who are pregnant can book directly with the Community Midwifery service ateither St Michael’s or Southmead Hospitals. Early booking (be<strong>for</strong>e the 12 th week ofpregnancy) is encouraged in order to get the best possible support.The midwifery service includes one to one support on parenting issues includingbonding with your baby and breastfeeding. There are dedicated midwives who canoffer additional support to teenage parents, and to mothers with drug and alcoholproblems.Health Visiting and <strong>School</strong> Health Nursing ServiceThe Public Health Nursing service, comprising Health Visitors and <strong>School</strong> HealthNurses can provide in<strong>for</strong>mation and signposting support to parents.This is a universal service available to all parents of children from birth to leavingschool. Structured parent support services are available <strong>for</strong> those parents who, inpartnership with a health professional, are assessed as needing targeted and moreintensive support.All parents can expect an offer of the following input:• A Family Health Needs Assessment within 8 weeks of the birth of a baby.This will enable the health visitor and family to agree an initial plan <strong>for</strong> anyinterventions to achieve short, medium and long term objectives. This mayinclude the identification of particular support in relation to parenting• An 8 – 12 month review <strong>for</strong> all infants. This will include an assessment of thechild’s development, identify any parental concerns and discussion on arange of topics to promote the well being of the child and family• A request <strong>for</strong> the family to provide a written review of their child when agedtwo years. Follow up advice will be provided if developmental or parentingissues are identified. A contact will also be made if the family request it.• Signposting and referral to support services <strong>for</strong> school aged childrenThe Health Visiting Service is managed by Bristol Community Health. There are<strong>School</strong> Health Nursing Teams <strong>for</strong> the south of the city managed by UniversityHospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and <strong>for</strong> the north of the city managed byNorth Bristol NHS Trust. All new parents will receive details of their health visitor. Ahealth visitor can also be contacted via their GP or Children’s Centre. There is anamed <strong>School</strong> Health Nurse <strong>for</strong> every school in Bristol.From April 2009 the Health Visiting and <strong>School</strong> Health Nursing Servicewill be managed by North Bristol NHS Trust as part of the Community Child HealthPartnership.
