For parents of children aged:0-5Mellow ParentingWhat is this programme?Mellow Parenting is a programme designed to support families with complexrelationship issues with their child. It combines personal support for the parents withvideo and direct work with parents on their parenting problems. It has provedeffective in recruiting and engaging parents who have severe problems and havedifficulties engaging with professionals. The issues often stretch back to their ownchildhood and their experience of being parented.This course is labour intensive. The facilitators have access to supervision fromMellow Parenting trainers.Where are the programmes delivered?Rosemary Nursery and Early Years Centre (EC3) 0117 3773297Freshways Family Resource Centre (N1) 0117 923 5353There are more Mellow Parenting practitioners based at other Early Years settingwho will be delivering courses in the future. Contact Jane Crane at Henbury CourtChildren’s Centre for more information on 0117 3534479.Content of the programme:Prior to the group starting, individual sessions will take place within the family home.This will include an interview and video taping of the parent and child interactions(the tape will be used within the group).The programme runs for up to 16 weeks, one day a week. Parents attend with aminimum of one child under 5.The course involves:• Intensive group work sessions for the parents looking at there own personalissues. This will also include how they were parented as a child.• Stimulating group sessions for the children in an early years setting.• Activity sessions for the parent and child together. This is where the parentscan try out their new parenting skills with support from professional staff.• Lunch. Parents and children eat together, again with is support from staff tohelp parents with any behavioural issues.• Course sessions for parents focusing on parenting issues (the video tapeswill be used during this session).• Tasks to try out at home.How it can be accessed:Referrals come from social workers, health visitors, early year practitioners or selfreferrals directly to the setting delivering the course.January 2009
For parents of children aged:under 19Parents togetherWhat is this programme?Parentline Plus’ Parents Together programme offers parents support with their ownissues as well as teaching evidence based parenting skills through flexible topicbased parenting groups or individual parenting coaching sessions. Group titlesinclude: Getting on with your child/teenager, Less shouting more co-operation,Dealing with anger, Bringing up confident children, Helping children learn, Copingwith teenage issues, Families dealing with racism/homophobia, Supporting childrenthrough change and loss, Ages and Stages, Time to talk about sex/drugs andUnderstanding children’s behaviour.Where are the programmes delivered?The programme of free parenting groups is delivered at schools and communityvenues in North, South and Central Bristol.Individual parenting coaching is currently available at The Park in Knowle West andSt Werburgh’s Primary School.Content of the programme:Contents of the group or individual sessions include:• Parent’s own needs• What children and young people need• Understanding their behaviour• Ways to support our children• How to set boundaries and time to think about what boundaries are right forour family• Child and adolescent growth and development• Dealing with anger• Listening skills and assertiveness skills• Teenage issues• Self esteem and confidence for parents and young peopleSession DetailsGroups can be one off workshops or longer facilitated groups, each session last for 2hours.
