For parents of children aged: 8-16School Home SupportWhat is School-Home Support?School-Home Support (SHS) is a national charity that builds bridges between homeand school to enable children and young people to make the most of their education.SHS specialises in providing experienced practitioners to schools, who help children,young people and their families to overcome problems which act as barriers tolearning. Based in the school building, SHS practitioners become an integral part ofthe schools pastoral care team.Working closely with schools and local authorities, SHS identify difficulties beforethey reach crisis point, supporting pupils who are struggling and helping families toaccess the services and practical support they need.How do parents get involved?SHS practitioners work with families either in the school in which they are based oracross a cluster of neighbouring schools. They promote themselves and their role,making links with parents and ensuring that parents know who they are and whatthey do. Parents can also contact their child’s school directly to ask to speak to theSHS practitioner if they have one.Some of the services offered by SHS practitioners include;Delivering a range of parenting support services to parents/carers of children aged 8-16 so that their children and young people have the support they need to thrive andachieve, this includes:• Basic parenting classes.• Support for parents so that they are able to engage with their child’s learning.• Working with parents’ on reasons or issues to do with their child’s non-attendance e.g. peer issues, bullying or engagement with the curriculum.The aim of the service is to provide practical, independent and non-judgmentalsupport for children, young people and their families delivered from a school base.Benefits of School-Home-SupportChildren and young people achieve measurable improvements in their behaviour,attendance and/or attainment as a result of improved family support.SHS practitioners are independent and operating from a school base means theyhave the time and resources to build up a relationship of trust with families.
