Guidelines for Developing a <strong>Critical</strong> <strong>Incident</strong> Management Plan for a Safe School EnvironmentUsing Staircases:• Walk in single file along the right-hand side <strong>of</strong> the stairways.• Hold on to the rails to maintain balance going up and down staircase.• Ensure adequate lighting along dark corridors and stairways.Vehicular Traffic on the School Compound:• Do not hop onto a moving vehicle in the schoolyard.• Be on the lookout for delivery trucks and other vehicles entering or leaving theschool premises.• Stay clear <strong>of</strong> delivery loading areas.Using the Roadways:• Obey the traffic warden and traffic lights.• Know what the pedestrian traffic signals means, and obey them.• Always walk on the sidewalk.• When there is no sidewalk, walk on the right-hand side <strong>of</strong> the road, facing oncomingtraffic.• When walking in a group, walk in single file.• Do not cross on corners.• When crossing the road, look up the road, look down the road, look up again, and ifthe road is clear, walk briskly across.Follow-up Action• Accidents must be reported to the police and insurance company within 24 hours.• Provide emotional and other support to members <strong>of</strong> the school family involved naccident.• Provide special assistance to traumatized individuals.<strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> 2007 / 102
