Guidelines for Developing a Critical Incident Management Plan for a Safe School EnvironmentIncident: Unauthorised Removal ofStudentPotential OutcomesUndue stress and possible injury to the studentPre-plan Action• Conduct crime-prevention assessment in collaboration with police.• Post signs stating that all visitors should report to the office.• Post signs that say that visitors are subject to search.• School’s perimeter wall should be intact.• Get volunteers, e.g. parents or senior citizens to meet visitors and escort then to theoffice.• Ensure that volunteers wear identification badges.• Ensure clear lines of sight by removing unnecessary obstacles and trimmingvegetation.• Ensure that procedures governing the release of a student are consistently observed.• Establish procedures verifying any changes in the pick up of students.• Keep a file on students who have non-custodial parents.• Keep updated files on students who are involved in custody issues.Immediate Action• Assess the situation• Gather all available information on the student.• Call the police.• Contact student’s parents of guardians.• Identify witnesses and get statements from them describing the unauthorized personand any other relevant information such as the car that might have been used by theperson.• Brief the staff as to what is happening.• In the case of graffiti, have it removed immediately.Ministry of Education 2008 / 89
