Guidelines for Developing a <strong>Critical</strong> <strong>Incident</strong> Management Plan for a Safe School EnvironmentWhat is a <strong>Critical</strong> <strong>Incident</strong>Management Plan (CIMP)?A <strong>Critical</strong> <strong>Incident</strong> Management Plan (CIMP), is a proactive and direct way <strong>of</strong> planning forand managing critical incidents. A school-based plan also includes a realistic and periodicassessment <strong>of</strong> the school’s facilities, complemented by effective decision making, in order toachieve the desired level <strong>of</strong> safety. The plan should indicate specific tasks to be implementedonce a crisis is in force.Purposes <strong>of</strong> the PlanThe purpose <strong>of</strong> a co-ordinated response to critical incidents is to provide:1. A rapid response to critical incidents at school;2. A systematic approach to critical incidents among the critical incident management teammembers;3. A system for evaluating the school’s response to critical incidents;4. Improved management <strong>of</strong> information by the school during a crisis.Priorities <strong>of</strong> the PlanThe priorities <strong>of</strong> an operational CIMP are to:1. Protect human life/minimise personal injury;2. Prevent/minimise physical damage;3. Restore normality.Features <strong>of</strong> a Management PlanDesirable features <strong>of</strong> a workable management plan should include:• Provision <strong>of</strong> access to support services.• Development <strong>of</strong> evacuation procedures.• Periodic practice <strong>of</strong> evacuation plan.• Assigning <strong>of</strong> duties to school staff.• Ensuring that staff and students are familiar with emergency warnings.• Provision <strong>of</strong> assistance to students with Special Needs.<strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> 2007 / 26
