Guidelines for Developing a <strong>Critical</strong> <strong>Incident</strong> Management Plan for a Safe School EnvironmentInterventive Response StrategiesInterventive response strategies provide general guidelines for responding to specific criticalincidents that occur at school. These include:Crime and Violence<strong>Incident</strong>: Student FightFighting, between student and student; member <strong>of</strong> staff and student; with or without weapons.Potential OutcomesPhysical injury or death.Pre-plan Action• Establish and maintain zero tolerance <strong>of</strong> fights within the school setting.• Create a culture <strong>of</strong> respect.• Establish and maintain zero tolerance <strong>of</strong> violent play within the school setting.• Conduct frequent, spontaneous searches among students for weapons or otherinstruments that could become weapons.• Confiscate all tools that could become instrument• Ensure that adequate resources are in place.• Ensure adequate supervision <strong>of</strong> classrooms and other areas where studentscongregate.• Avoid promoting any form <strong>of</strong> idleness on the school compound.• Do annual review <strong>of</strong> the school rules by members <strong>of</strong> staff, students and parents.• Implement a violence prevention programme, with special emphasis on conflictresolution and anger management strategies.• Establish a student-assistance and welfare programme for needy students.<strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> 2007 / 50
