EDITOR’S NOTE One of the contributors to this issue of Wagner News is Jonathan Livny who is pictured on the front cover. As the son of a Holocaust survivor he is among those whose lives were atrociously damaged from the 1930s onward by the actions of the Third Reich and those who did the bidding of its leaders. No sane and rational person could possibly wish to add to the suffering endured in these eight decades by so many of our fellow human beings the world over. The work of a composer who challenges us with the proposition that love has supremacy over power can inspire all of us to take up the duty of dismantling the legacy of fascism which has so blighted human history. It is the responsibility of all of us to work for a future for all such victims which frees them from the agony of their past. Discussions aimed at helping to relieve such people of burdens which they have carried since the darkest years of the twentieth century demand the utmost in respect and sensitivity. To have the remotest prospect of success such engagement could only be attempted by those who can identify with the people whose lives were so severely damaged or destroyed during the Nazi era. Fully qualified on this account is Daniel Barenboim, whose work with the East-West Divan Orchestra which he founded with Edward Said ten years ago is surely worthy of recognition in Nobel Peace Prize terms. In his footsteps now treads Jonathan Livny who founded the Wagner Society of Israel a couple of years ago. He passionately believes that the people of Israel are as entitled as everyone else in the world to opportunities to listen to Richard Wagner’s life-affirming music and it is his aim to offer them the chance to do so. Livny’s courage and that of his musicians in pursuing this aim was demonstrated by their recent attempt to break the taboo on performing Wagner’s music in Israel. Such a taboo serves to perpetuate a pernicious form of cultural confinement and deprivation upon the people to which it is applied. The cancellation of a planned Wagner concert in Tel Aviv was widely reported by the world’s news media. On page 48 you can read Jonathan Livny’s own account of this affair which he has written specially for Wagner News. –3–
