Welling LaGrone Jr., Nashville, Tenn.273: Old Glory Flag Archive Collage USD 1,000 - 1,500Framed collage of artifacts relating to the U.S. National flag known as Old Glory <strong>and</strong> Captain Stephen Driver, who coined thephrase. Includes flag fragment, a carte de visite of Driver, a reprint of New York Herald masthead <strong>and</strong> article, reproduction printof the Capitol of Tennessee (Nashville), contemporary photo of the flag, contemporary printed story of Captain Driver, <strong>and</strong> areproduction print of the Tennessee Capital Building. All paper items appear to be 20th century except for the Driver CDV, <strong>and</strong>are mounted in a giltwood frame with black linen matting <strong>and</strong> gold fillets. Exhibited Cheekwood Museum of <strong>Art</strong>, "NashvilleCollects", circa 1990. Overall size framed is 23" x 36". Provenance: estate of A. Welling LaGrone Jr., Nashville, Tenn.,purchased by him from Sykes & Fl<strong>and</strong>ers, Weare, NH. Documentation from that purchase states that the CDV <strong>and</strong> flag wereacquired from a direct descendent of Captain Driver. Driver, a Salem, Mass. sea captain, is said to have been given the flag in1831 before embarking on a round the world voyage, <strong>and</strong> was so impressed by the flag as it was hoisted <strong>and</strong> unfurled that hecalled it "Old Glory." The flag was used by Driver throughout his career at sea <strong>and</strong> taken with him when he retired to Nashville,Tennessee. When Gen. William Nelson's wing of the U.S. Army captured Nashville in 1862, Driver loaned it to the army to flyabove the Tennessee State Capitol. After the Civil War, Driver had the flag repaired <strong>and</strong>, according to Sykes <strong>and</strong> Fl<strong>and</strong>ers, sentthis fragment, <strong>and</strong> others, to his family in Salem. "Old Glory" remained in the possession of Driver's descendants until 1922when it was installed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.274: Framed flags, a 46 star & double framed 39 stars USD 250 - 3501ST ITEM: 46 star flag, cotton, framed. 15" H x 24" W. Early 20th century. 2ND ITEM: A double framed display of two silk 39star American flags, probably for parade. Flags from 3rd quarter of the 19th century. 14" x 20". Provenance: estate of A. WellingLaGrone Jr., Nashville, Tenn.275: 2 Pennants, 1 Ship & 1 Flag USD 400 - 6001ST ITEM: Ship's Long Pennant with stars <strong>and</strong> stripes, 13 stars on blue field with red <strong>and</strong> white stripe field. Machine stitchedlinen. Approximately 20 feet long by 6 1/4" H. Probably early 20th century. 2ND ITEM: Printed linen or silk flag, metal grommets,42 stars with 5 stripes. 8'7" x 28".
