Fall Fine Art and Antiques Auction320: 20 Linocut Prints, Maryland Art Inst. w/Lee Gatch USD 500 - 800A bound collection of twenty prints made from linoleum blocks, designed and cut by the students of the Maryland Institute Art,entitled "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." This collection was assembled between the years of 1920-1924. Included are worksby Lee Gatch, Charles O. Robinson, Tyron Wilson, Larry Murphy, Robert S. Geass, Paul H. Maky, Sheldon E. Schafer, andHarrietta Benson. Lee Gatch (1902-1968) is one of the Maryland Institute of Art's most noted alumni. While at the MarylandInstitute of Art, Gatch studied under Leon Kroll and John Sloan. After graduation, he traveled to France to study at the AmericanSchool at Fontainebleau and at the Académie Modern with Moise Kisling and André Lhote, a cubist academician. Possibly oneof Gatch's earliest known works. Linocuts measure 9" H x 7" W.321: John Baeder, Empire Diner USD 300 - 400"Empire Diner", photo mezzotint, by John Baeder (American, 20th c.). Caldwell Jr.326: Miniature painting, landscape with nude figures USD 300 - 600Miniature painting of two nude women in a landscape setting, probably watercolor on ivory, gilt metal pierced frame, housed in alarger ebonized and giltwood frame with carved corner blocks (contemporary). Unsigned but bears similarities to works byCharles Baxter (English, 1809-1879). Miniature painting measures approximately 3" x 2 1/8", overall framed dimensions 11" x13 1/2". Fall Fine Art and Antiques Auction327: Portrait of a Lady by Jean Antoine Giroust USD 1,000 - 2,000Oil on canvas painting of a lady in a black dress by Jean Antione Theodore Giroust (French, 1753-1817), signed center right"Giroust". Faint, mostly illegible inscription in French en verso that describes Giroust training. Contemporary giltwood frame. 101/4" x 8" sight, 14 3/8" x 12 1/4" framed. Provenance: Estate of A. Welling LaGrone Jr., Nashville, Tenn. Artist bio: Jean AntioneTheodore Giroust began his career at age 17 studying in the studio of Joseph-Marie Vien with Jacques-Louis David. In 1775,when Vien became the Director of the French Academy in Rome, Giroust decided to continue his studies under Nicolas BernardLepicie. In 1778, Giroust won the Prix De Rome with his painting "The Indignation of David." Giroust skill eventually led to hispresiding over the Paris Salon from 1788-1802. Following the French Revolution, Giroust declined in popularity. He eventuallyretired in the countryside. This painting, based on the style of dress, is a rare example of his work during his retirement period.(Other example of work at Dallas Museum of Art)328: Spanish School 19th c., portrait of woman w turban USD 1,000 - 1,500Oil on canvas painting of a woman in a turban, seated, with her head resting on her elbows.
