The uniform appears to beAmerican, Revolutionary War era. Unsigned, probably early 19th century. Molded frame with beaded edge pattern. 29-3/4" H x24-1/2' W canvas; 33-3/4' H x 28-1/2' W framed. Brass label identifies sitter as John Parke (Jacky) Custis. Custis (1754 –1781)was a Virginia planter, the son of Martha Washington and stepson of George Washington. He served in the Virginia GeneralAssembly and as an aide-de-camp to General Washington during the siege of Yorktown. He died of camp fever in October1781, just after Lord Cornwallis's surrender.
