Signed lowerright, "77 Sublett". 22" H x 29-3/4" W sight. 30-1/4" H x 37-3/4" H framed. Oak frame with linen matte. 1977. Carl Sublett studied<strong>Art</strong> History at the American Academy in Florence, Italy after World War II, <strong>and</strong> became Professor of <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Art</strong> at the University ofTennessee. Sublett was a member of the National Academy of Design. His works are in the collections of the National Academyof Design, The Tennessee State Museum, <strong>and</strong> Cheekwood Museum of <strong>Art</strong>, Nashville.35: Southern L<strong>and</strong>scape, View of Cumberl<strong>and</strong> Gap USD 1,000 - 2,000Southern l<strong>and</strong>scape painting, oil on canvas, depicting a view of Cumberl<strong>and</strong> Gap with mountains <strong>and</strong> log structures. Signed"O.M. '92" lower left. The painting depicts the evacuation of the Cumberl<strong>and</strong> Gap by the 7th Division of the Army of the Ohio.The Cumberl<strong>and</strong> Gap was occupied by the Confederates until June of 1862. The Union Army then occupied the gap untilSeptember, 17th 1863. It is believed that the house in the foreground was the headquarters of Brig. Gen. Absalom Baird of the27th brigade with the tents surrounding the home belonging to the 14th Kentucky infantry. It is likely that the painting is basedoff of a Civil War era print. Provenance: Collectionof Grace Tankersley, Knoxville, TN., purchased from Carole Wahler.36: Watercolor portrait of John Sevier, circa 1860 USD 300 - 350Oval watercolor on paper portrait of a mid-19th century gentleman, possibly a painted photograph. Subject is identified by labelon back as " John Sevier, gr<strong>and</strong>father of Mrs. __ LaMalta." John Sevier (1815-1867) was the son of Dr. Samuel Sevier, <strong>and</strong> thegr<strong>and</strong>son of Tennessee's first governor, John Sevier. He is listed in the 1860 census as a 50 year old merchant living inMemphis. En verso is a faint photographic image of another man with moustache <strong>and</strong> an impressed mark reading "Complimentsof Webster's Gallery, __ville Ky," <strong>and</strong> a pencil inscription "Mrs. Sevier." Image 7-1/2" x 6", framed 14-1/2" x 12-1/2". Circa 1860.37: Lloyd Freeman watercolor, TN l<strong>and</strong>scape USD 300 - 400Panoramic Tennessee l<strong>and</strong>scape watercolor painting by Lloyd Freeman (California/Tennessee, 1874 - 1930) depicting ameadow scene with trees in the foreground <strong>and</strong> grazing cows in the background, most likely East Tennessee. Pencil signedlower left <strong>and</strong> housed in gilt wooden frame. Lloyd Freeman was the nephew of well known Knoxville artist Lloyd Branson(1853–1925). Sight - 9-1/2" H x 17" W. Framed - 15-5/8" H x 23-3/8" W. Provenance: Descended through the Knoxville family ofNell Thompson Denton <strong>and</strong> Fred G. Denton, Sr. who lived at 1970 Branson Ave. in Knoxville from 1918 to about 1950. Anotherfamily member, Barbara Thompson Kizer, also lived on Branson Ave. <strong>and</strong> was also a painter.
