As a child heloved to draw <strong>and</strong> sketch <strong>and</strong> received formal art training at Michigan State University <strong>and</strong> Lansing Community College. Hetrained <strong>and</strong> worked as an illustrator <strong>and</strong> commercial artist <strong>and</strong> painted with watercolor <strong>and</strong> gouache in a "realistic controlledmanner". Stilson's artcareer started in New York City as an illustrator for several periodicals. Books illustrated by Stilson include "Our Fern <strong>and</strong> TheirHaunts" by Willard N. Chute <strong>and</strong> "The Writers of Knickerbocker New York" by Hamilton Wright Mabie. An extensive biography ofStilson was done in a June 1925 article of the Bridgeport Life Newspaper of Bridgeport, Connecticut reviewing Stilson's artistic,poetic, <strong>and</strong> musical genius.
