Guiding Principles2.9 To complete the <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Programme</strong> satisfactorily, a foundation doctor must beable to perform consistently well and have taken increasing levels <strong>of</strong> responsibility.This will prepare the foundation doctor for the next steps in their medical career asthey enter specialty training.Structured and time-based2.10 <strong>The</strong> two-year <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Programme</strong> comprises a series <strong>of</strong> clinical placementsconfigured to enable foundation doctors to acquire and demonstrate the outcomesset out in the Curriculum.2.11 Deaneries/foundation schools must prospectively approve each rotation and mustmonitor that they are fit for the purpose <strong>of</strong> foundation training i.e. meet or exceedthe requirements set by the GMC.2.12 <strong>Foundation</strong> doctors must complete 12 months in approved F1 placements and meet theother requirements to be considered for the Attainment <strong>of</strong> F1 Competence Documentand completion <strong>of</strong> the Certificate <strong>of</strong> Experience needed for an application for fullregistration with the GMC [see 10.1 – 10.3 (& section 10: table 1]. Similarly, foundationdoctors must complete 12 months in approved F2 placements and meet the otherrequirements to receive a <strong>Foundation</strong> Achievement <strong>of</strong> Competence Document (FACD)(see 10.14 & section 10: table 2).Supervised training2.13 All foundation doctors must be appropriately supervised with ready availability<strong>of</strong> support in the workplace by a clinical supervisor (see 5.37 - 5.41). <strong>Foundation</strong>doctors in an academic programme will also have an academic supervisor or equivalent(see 5.42 – 5.44).2.14 Each foundation doctor must have an educational supervisor who is responsible forthe educational agreement, overall supervision and management <strong>of</strong> their educationalprogress during a training placement or series <strong>of</strong> placements (see 5.32 – 5.36).2.15 Educational supervisors are accountable to a <strong>Foundation</strong> Training <strong>Programme</strong> Director/Tutor (FTPD/T), who is responsible for the rotations and training that make up F1, F2or a two-year <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Programme</strong> (see 5.24 – 5.31).<strong>The</strong> UK <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Programme</strong>: <strong>Reference</strong> <strong>Guide</strong>4
