Sample job description for a <strong>Foundation</strong> SchoolManager (FSM)Job Title<strong>Foundation</strong> School Manager (FSM)Reports to<strong>Foundation</strong> School Director (FSD)/deanery business managerRole Overview<strong>The</strong> FSM is responsible for the management <strong>of</strong> the operational and resource-related activities<strong>of</strong> the foundation school. Reporting to the FSD and normally supported by an administrativeteam, they will represent the school and/or deanery in recruitment and postgraduate medicaleducation matters, which relate to the <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Programme</strong>.Key responsibilities1. <strong>Programme</strong> management:• to manage the recruitment process for foundation training in accordance withthe national and deanery processes. To include coordination and planning <strong>of</strong>annual scoring events and interview panels with due regard to the requirements <strong>of</strong>equality, diversity and employment legislation;• to ensure systems are in place to record and maintain a database <strong>of</strong> foundationdoctor and post details, enabling accurate monitoring and reporting includingflexible training posts and foundation doctors requiring additional educationalsupport;• to develop, maintain and monitor a process for the approval <strong>of</strong> all foundationtraining programmes within the foundation school. To work with the FSD tobalance the national requirements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Programme</strong> with localconstraints, negotiating with local health care organisations to secure theavailability <strong>of</strong> appropriate training programmes.2. Communications and liaison:• to develop and maintain strong links with all key stakeholders to ensure theeffective communication and successful delivery <strong>of</strong> policies and procedures relatingto the <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Programme</strong>;• to provide a support and advice service on all aspects <strong>of</strong> foundation training tomedical students, foundation doctors and the local foundation faculty;• to attend and represent the foundation school at national FSM meetings andUK <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Programme</strong> Office (UKFPO) conferences.3. Governance and quality management:• to support the quality management process in accordance with deanery policy;• to provide regular reports for the foundation school board and committees and todeliver presentations in relation to foundation training as required;• to organise and contribute to the submission <strong>of</strong> the school’s annual report to theUKFPO;<strong>The</strong> UK <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Programme</strong>: <strong>Reference</strong> <strong>Guide</strong>62
