Arthurdon SchoolThe case study visit took place in <strong>the</strong> Summer <strong>of</strong> 2006. At that time <strong>the</strong> first cohort <strong>of</strong> <strong>Project</strong> pupilswere in <strong>Year</strong> 9.This mixed 11-18 comprehensive school is located in a village in a formerly industrial area. Theproportion <strong>of</strong> pupils at <strong>the</strong> school eligible for free school meals is higher than <strong>the</strong> national average <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong>re are relatively few pupils at <strong>the</strong> school from minority ethnic groups. The school operated some forms <strong>of</strong> acceleration prior to joining Phase 1 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Project</strong>, with early entryto GCSE already being possible in science <strong>and</strong>, in <strong>the</strong> previous year, <strong>the</strong> top ma<strong>the</strong>matics set had beenentered for both ma<strong>the</strong>matics <strong>and</strong> statistics in <strong>Year</strong> 11. However, <strong>the</strong> latter experiment had not been asuccess. When <strong>the</strong> school joined <strong>the</strong> <strong>Two</strong> <strong>Year</strong> <strong>Key</strong> <strong>Stage</strong> 3 <strong>Project</strong> it was decided that only <strong>the</strong> core subjectswould <strong>of</strong>fer a condensed <strong>Key</strong> <strong>Stage</strong> 3 programme <strong>and</strong>, in <strong>the</strong> core subjects, only some pupils wouldfollow <strong>the</strong> condensed courses. The programme is best understood as splitting <strong>the</strong> cohort into threegroups. The groups might be characterised as an accelerated group, an enriched group <strong>and</strong> aconventional group. The top sets in ma<strong>the</strong>matics, English <strong>and</strong> science comprised <strong>the</strong> accelerated group <strong>and</strong> undertook <strong>the</strong><strong>Key</strong> <strong>Stage</strong> 3 programme <strong>of</strong> study in <strong>Year</strong> 7 <strong>and</strong> <strong>Year</strong> 8, beginning GCSE courses <strong>the</strong>reafter. In <strong>the</strong> case<strong>of</strong> science, <strong>Year</strong> 8 pupils completed some GCSE biology modules with <strong>the</strong> intention that <strong>the</strong>y shouldconclude biology in <strong>Year</strong> 10 <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n complete physics <strong>and</strong> chemistry GCSEs in <strong>Year</strong> 11. This planwas however disrupted by changes to <strong>the</strong> biology GCSE specification requiring pupils to complete <strong>the</strong>irGCSE course <strong>the</strong> following year. Consequently <strong>the</strong> pupils were forced to take GCSE biology in <strong>Year</strong> 9ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>Year</strong> 10.In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics it was intended that pupils should begin <strong>the</strong>ir GCSE ma<strong>the</strong>matics course in<strong>Year</strong> 9, take GCSE statistics in <strong>Year</strong> 10, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n complete <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics course in <strong>Year</strong> 11.However, once again <strong>the</strong> plans were disrupted due to changes in examination specifications (from athree tier to two tier GCSE arrangement). Consequently, once again, pupils were required to complete<strong>the</strong>ir ma<strong>the</strong>matics GCSE course earlier than had been planned (<strong>Year</strong> 10 ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>Year</strong> 11) <strong>and</strong> follow<strong>the</strong> statistics course in <strong>Year</strong> 11. The accelerated English groups would complete GCSE Englishlanguage in <strong>Year</strong> 10 followed by literature <strong>and</strong> media studies in <strong>Year</strong> 11.The enriched cohort comprised <strong>the</strong> middle sets for science <strong>and</strong> English. These pupils followed acondensed <strong>Key</strong> <strong>Stage</strong> 3 course in <strong>Year</strong>s 7 <strong>and</strong> 9 with an enrichment programme during <strong>Year</strong> 8 - <strong>of</strong>tenseen as <strong>the</strong> ‘dip’ year. In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> English this focused on a media project involving working with awriter, a trip to a museum <strong>of</strong> film <strong>and</strong> pupils making <strong>the</strong>ir own video about <strong>the</strong> school. In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong>science <strong>the</strong> enrichment year comprised <strong>the</strong> ‘Space <strong>Project</strong>’ involving a trip to <strong>the</strong> National Space Centre<strong>and</strong> lots <strong>of</strong> investigations <strong>and</strong> skills-based work with opportunities to apply <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge (e.g.,looking at forces in space, growing plants in space etc). The conventional group comprised <strong>the</strong> lower sets in ma<strong>the</strong>matics, English <strong>and</strong> science who followed athree year <strong>Key</strong> <strong>Stage</strong> 3 programme. There was also a plan for an ‘Access Group’ <strong>the</strong> following yearcomprising pupils who had achieved Level 3 at <strong>Key</strong> <strong>Stage</strong> 2 with 50 per cent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Year</strong> 7 timetablebeing delivered by <strong>the</strong> form tutor <strong>and</strong> with a subsequent <strong>Two</strong> <strong>Year</strong> <strong>Key</strong> <strong>Stage</strong> 3 programme in <strong>Year</strong> 8<strong>and</strong> <strong>Year</strong> 9.75
