At Bidar and Gulbarga 69Hazrat Imam ASgave the glad tidings in favour of BandagiMakhdoom RAthat his zath smelt like that of Hazrat ProphetMuhammad SLM .Hazrat Imam AShas said, “Allah Most High had made SyedMuhammad Gesudaraz RA the murshid of his time. Allah Most Highwill ask those people of his time who did not learn the knowledgeof the Divine Secrets of God from him, “You had a murshid likeSyed Muhammad in your time. Why did you not seek the reality ofthe religion from him?”Somebody asked the Imam AS , “Miranji! Hazrat Muhiyuddin IbnArabi RA has said, ‘Haq [God] is perceived and Khalq [Created] isimagined.’ Hazrat Gesudaraz RAhas in reply said, ‘Haq [God] isimagined and Khalq [Creation] is perceived. If Hazrat Ibn Arabi RAwere in our times and had met me I would have converted him toIslam afresh by making him recite the Kalima [IslamicTestification].’ How is this?” In reply the Imam ASsaid, “In thismatter, Hazrat Gesudaraz RA was like a suckling baby before HazratIbn Arabi RA .”In short, Hazrat Imam ASstarted his journey from Gulbarga toBijapur under the command of Allah Most High. There, he campedat the mausoleum of the perfect saint Shah Hamza RA . That place iswell known till this day. In those days, the fort was inhabited.Later, the foundation for the outer fort was laid. From here theImam AS reached Raibagh and camped at the Jama’ Masjid. Then heproceeded towards the Dabhol port. There are many incidentsduring the journey. But this faqir aims at brevity. Verily, there isevidence of the Truth of the Imam AS . Then O people of Equity, what more evidence do you need to repose faith in the Imam AS ?Allah says, “Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?”112. Journey to MakkahThis is about Imam Mahdi AS ’s departure for Makkah for Hajpilgrimage, first claim to Mahdiship, return to Ahmadabad andincidents during the voyage. It is narrated that when Hazrat Imam Syed Muhammad JaunpuriMahdi al-Mau'ood AS arrived at the Dabhol port, he saw that peoplewere rushing to board the ship. He recited two couplets. Theirpurport is: “Where are you, O the people who are going for Haj?Your beloved [ma’shooq] is here, come here, come here. Come ifyou are desirous of God. But if you are not desirous of God, do notcome, do not come.” Elsewhere, the last line reads, “Those who donot desire! Do not come. Do not come!” Then the Imam AS boardedthe ship. Allah says in Quran, “…And take a provision (with you)for the journey, but best of provisions is right conduct…” 1 TheImam ASand his companions started their journey with theprovision of taqwaa and tawakkul [Piety and Trust in Allah].The most correct narrative says: When Hazrat Mahdi al-Mau'ood ASKhalifatullah embarked, there were 360 men with him. They werethe servants of Allah from various cities and from various tribes. The common people among them were superior saints of God.They had abandoned the world. They had sacrificed the love of theeffects and belongings of the world over their love for God. Theyhad trusted in Allah in all matters and circumstances. They hadassigned all their works to God. Their breasts were full of themanifest ulum [knowledge] and were illuminated with theimmanent ulum. May Allah be pleased with them all! When the Imam AS had sailed for some days [their number is knownto Allah alone], all of a sudden a storm hit from morning toevening threatening the ship. The companions told the Imam AS ,“Your servants are going to Ka’batullah [the Shrine at Makkah]1Quran, S. 55: 16 AYA.1Quran, S. 2: 197 AYA. Here ‘the right conduct’ stands for the Arabic wordtaqwaa, which, according to Arabic English Dictionary, means godliness, devoutness, piety.
Journey to Makkah 71under the command of Allah. Will the person who works for Allahbe killed?” Hazrat Imam Mahdi AS said, “Be patient. Who is thisbanda [servant] of Allah?” The storm appeared to be moredevastating. The anxiety of the passengers in the ship increased. They started crying. Under the circumstances, Hazrat BandagiMiyan Syed Salamullah RZ told the Imam AS , “Miranji! The ship isabout to drown.” Hazrat Imam ASsaid, “Be quiet! Who is thisbanda?” Again Hazrat Salamullah RZsaid, “The drowning isimminent.” The Imam AS said, “What should this banda do? Whenhad I told you the command of this banda could over-rid thecommand of Allah?” Miyan Salamullah RZ said, “Then tell us thatyou do not have the keys of the divine treasures in your hand.”Hazrat Imam ASsaid, “If the Lord has given the keys of Histreasures in the hands of his banda, does this banda get the powerto open the locks without the permission of the Lord?” After this, the Imam AS got up smiling, came to the side of the ship, gesturedwith his hand towards the ocean. The storm subsided. Thecompanions asked the Imam AS , “Why did this storm come?” TheImam ASsaid, “The fish in the ocean had some out to see thisbanda. This banda was inside. They could not see him and startedthe trouble. When I came out, the fish saw me and went to theirabode. The storm subsided.”Hazrat Imam AS said, “One of the fish was born on this side of theocean. Allah had promised it that He would show it the Seal of theSainthood of Prophet Muhammad SLM . In another narrative it is saidthat this was the fish that had protected Hazrat Yunus AS [Jonah] inits bosom. Allah had promised it that He would show the Mahdi al-Mau'ood AS . Hence, it came along with all the fish of the ocean andgot the divine promise redeemed. It is said that one of the fishraised its head above the level of the water thrice. Its head lookedlike a mountain. All the inmates of the ship had seen the event. The quantity of the provisions in the ship was declining and thedistance to be covered was long. Hazrat Imam AS said, “There wasanother underlying reason also from Allah. Had you been patient,we would have reached our destination by this storm itself. The72Shawahid Al-Vilayatdistance to be covered in many days would have been covered inone day. You people were impatient.”The companions of the Imam ASwere in dire circumstances ofstarvation and penury in the ship. All of a sudden, a person came ina small boat with provisions and started asking, “Who are thepeople who trust in Allah in this ship?” Then he came to theImam ASand said, “Allah Most High has sent these things.” TheImam AS accepted these donations. Nobody knew who that personwas and where he had come from. Hazrat Imam ASthen told hiscompanions, “Take this. This is rizq-e-halal-e-tayyab [chastelypermitted sustenance].” It contained rice, ghee, roasted meat, baked bread, salt, water, firewood and cooking vessels. Thequantity was enough to feed the pious companions of the Imam AS .See O Equitable persons! Verily these are clear signs for thepeople of wisdom.”It is narrated that a thought occurred in the mind of a companion ofthe Imam AS that the grave of a certain Vali [saint] was on the wayand that the Imam AS did not visit it. Now that place could not bereached. When the companion had this misgiving in his mind, theImam AS looked at him sternly. This look removed the veils on theeyes of the companion. What he then sees is that all the awlia AS[saints] that are laid to eternal rest in various places in India, are inview and they are pulling the robes of the ship of the Imam AS .Seeing this, the companion RZ came to the Imam AS and soughtforgiveness for his misdemeanor. When Hazrat Imam AS was lying on his side, a thought occurred inthe mind of a migrant-companion about the age of the Imam AS .Without his asking, the Imam AStold him, “For thirty years, wewere the ‘ashiq of the Zath-e-Zul-Jalal [God] and for the last thirtyyears, the Zath-e-Zul-Jalal is the ‘ashiq of this handful of dust[that is, the person of the Imam AS ].It is narrated that Hazrat Imam AS recited the Hindi doha [couplet]the meaning of which is, “I am devoted to my beloved and mybeloved is devoted to me. I am the floral crown of my beloved and
