13. At AhmadabadThis is about Hazrat Imam Syed Muhammad Mahdi al-Mau'ood ASarriving at Ahmadabad, camping at the mosque of Taj Khan Salar, making the second claim to be Mahdi al-Mau'ood and thousandsand thousands of people reposing Iman [Faith] in the Imam AS .Allah says: “He whom Allah guideth, he indeed is led aright, andhe whom He sendeth astray, for him thou wilt not find a guidingfriend.” 1It is narrated that Hazrat Imam AS did not stay in any place for 18months except in four places: Chapanir, Ahmadabad, Piran Patanand Barhli [all in Gujarat, India]. There were 360 neighbourhoodsin this city when the Imam AS came here. The Imam AS camped at theMosque of Taj Khan Salar, which is near the Jamalpur Darwaza[Gate]. The Imam AS camped here for 18 months. Allah says, “…Hesaid: ‘O my people! Worship Allah! Ye have no other god but Him.Will ye not fear (Allah)?” 2 In accordance with this command ofAllah, Hazrat Imam Mahdi AS called the people unto Allah, as thecoming of the Imam AS was like the coming of a Prophet SLM . HazratMuhammad SLM has said, “How will my ummah be destroyed whenI am at its beginning, Esa AS is at its end and Mahdi from among mydescendants is in the middle?” And when Prophet Muhammad SLMhad said this, the Imam AShad not staked his claim to be apreceptor, teacher or preacher. The behaviour of the Imam AS wasnot like that of a saint. In other words, the Imam AS did not engagein learning the sciences of Fiqh, Tafsir, Hadis, Suluk, Tariqat, theRealities and Tasawwuf by reading the relevant books. He wouldnot perform the supererogatory [nawafil] prayers. He used toperform the obligatory and sunnat prayers. He did not perform anywaza’if [daily worship, counting of beads]. He did not practise thecustoms of the mashayakhin [old holy persons] and wa’iz[preachers], which tended to be innovations [bid’aat] and violatedthe sunnat [practice] of Prophet Muhammad SLM . He was free of1 Quran, S. 18: 17 MMP.2 Quran, S. 7: 65 AYA.78Shawahid Al-Vilayatthem all. He always tended towards lamenting, poverty and totaldependence on Allah. He always called the people to perform theobligations, follow the practices of Prophet Muhammad SLMandperform zikr [remembrance of Allah].It is narrated that large numbers of people assembled to listen tothe bountiful bayan [discourse, sermon] and fruitful and rewardingdivine call. The assembly was so great that there used to be noplace near the Imam AS . The mosque was large and could allowthousands of people to assemble. The courtyard of the mosque toowas larger than the yards of large and spacious mosques elsewhere. That grand mosque proudly stands there even to this day. In short,if they could not get a place to sit or stand near the Imam AS , theyused to occupy the yard. And if they could not get accommodationeven there, they would climb the walls and nearby trees to listen tothe discourse of the Imam AS .An open miracle of the Imam AS was that the people who were veryclose to the Imam AS and those who were far away from him, usedto hear the voice of the Imam ASat one and the same level ofloudness. It is narrated that the people who assembled to listen to thediscourse of the Imam AS experienced unawareness and inebriationof the divine Love, which manifested the effects of his bounty andhis paskhurda [sanctified leftover]. They would be attractedtowards the Divinity without any effort on their part. Whiledelivering the discourse, the Imam AS used to cry and tears floweddown his cheeks and beard. If even a drop of such tears fell onanybody, the latter would go into a divine ecstasy and remainunaware of the surroundings for days on end. The person who metthe Imam ASwould repent [perform tauba] his evil deeds on hisown and reverted to the best of behavior. The zani [adulterers]abandoned adultery. The killers became humane. Thieves wouldgive up stealing. Sinners gave up sins.It is narrated that a nephew of Sultan Mahmood Be-gadha [ruler ofGujarat] went to the house of a fallen woman with some of his
At Ahmadabad 79depraved friends. The meeting ended in disappointment. Hebecame sad and came in a drunken state with an unsheathed swordin hand returning to his house. He saw that the Imam AS was stayingwith his companions on the banks of Sabarmati River. He askedthem, “Who are you and what do you do here?” The Imam AS said,“The person who leaves his friend in a sad state, takes the road toreconciliation in our guidance.” This reply rendered himunconscious; he raised a slogan, fell down and remained in thatstate for a long time. When he recovered, he repented, became afaqir and remained in the company of the Imam AS .One of the miracles of the Imam AS was that whoever came to himwith sincerity, he would become his friend. The love of the worldwould vanish form his heart. Then his heart would get comfort inthe remembrance of Allah. The solace that could not be achievedeven after years of religious exercises and seclusion would be hisin moments. This was not confined to one or two persons.Whoever, man or woman, unlettered or learned, free or slave, childor adult, met the Imam AS came under the purview of the QuranicVerse: “If ye would count up the favours of Allah, never would yebe able to number them: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, MostMerciful.” 1 Verily, there are clear signs and convincing evidencein this discourse for the people of wisdom. In short, as a charity of the feet of the Imam AS , every ahl-e-dil[man of the heart] assumed the state of being engaged in the Truthin absolute absorption. The ulama cast aside their knowledge, themashayakhin ditched their preoccupation, the ministers abandonedtheir ministries, the wealthy shed their business, and tradesmen gotrid of their professions. Most of the people of the world turnedaway from the worldly preoccupations. So, know O Musaddiq! That if the names of the people who gave up the world and reposedfaith in the Imam ASwere to be written, this book will becomevoluminous. Here we mention only the sincere tasdiq of somespecial companions of the Imam AS . They were the migrants, thepeople who merited the glad tidings from the Imam AS and he1 Quran, S. 16: 18 AYA.80Shawahid Al-Vilayataccepted them. This is done to increase the sidq [truth] in thehearts of the musiddiqin [those who performed the tasdiq ofImam AS ], by the grace of Allah so that they come close to theTruth.13.1 Bandagi Malik Burhanuddin RZHazrat Bandagi Malik Burhanuddin RZreposed faith in HazratImam Mahdi AS at this place. He was a learned man of the Banyanitribe. He was a true devotee and the third Caliph of the Imam-e-Rabbanmi [Hazrat Imam Mahdi AS ]. As such, he is called the Sanie-UmarRZ[Umar, the Second]. It is stated that one day HazratImam Mahdi AS was explaining the Quranic Verse, “By no meansshall ye attain righteousness unless ye give (freely) of that whichye love; and whatever ye give, of a truth Allah knoweth it.” 1 HereHazrat Imam AS indicated that the word ‘Birri’ [Righteousness orGood] was the zath [essence, nature] of Allah. When BandagiMalik Burhanuddin RZ heard this, he immediately offered his swordand horse, which he loved most, to the Imam AS and said, “I havethe greatest love for these two things.” The Imam AS rejected it. Heasked, “What for is the sword and the horse?” The Malik RZ said,“To protect the life [jaan].” The Imam AS said, “This banda has notcome here to collect the sword and the horse. Allah Most Highdemands your life [jaan] and not the sword and the horse.” Thenthe Malik RZimmediately performed the tasdiq of the ImamMahdi AS and took to the company of the Imam AS . He remained inthe company of the Imam ASalways. He is counted among thespecial Khalifas of Hazrat Imam Mahdi AS . The Imam AS has givenhim glad tidings as Sani-e-Umar Farooq RZ[Umar Farooq, thesecond], mahi-e-bid’at-o-fusuq [Eraser of the innovations andsins]. Hazrat Imam Mahdi AS has counted him as his third Khalifa. He has given the Malik RZ many great glad tidings.Hazrat Imam Mahdi ASis narrated to have said, “Bandagi MiranSyed Mahmood RZ and Bandagi Miyan Syed Khundmir RZ are both1 Quran, S. 3: 92 AYA.
