Open Space Acquisition & StewardshipThe Conservation Commission maintains and acquires open space for the Town ofShirley. Open space is valuable to town residents as passive recreational land (hiking,bird-watching, etc.), for protecting water resources, for providing important fish andwildlife habitat, and for enhancing the overall desirability of living in our community. The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and WildlifeService also preserve open space within Shirley. Additionally, some residents have setaside private land in conservation restriction. In FY12, the Conservation Commission acquired approximately 16 acres of land offHolden Road. This land, named Old Town Line Conservation Area, is primarilywoodland and wetland, and provides a critical link between two larger conservationparcels for humans and wildlife, including state-listed rare species. The southern portionof this land is located in the Water Supply and Wellhead Protection Zone 2. The land waspurchased at a bargain price from Virginia and Daniel McNiff of J&A Realty by the BayState Trail Riders Association and a group of individual donors: Ward and Susan Baxter,Norm and Natalie Delorey, Ron Farnsworth, Alan Field, Cynthia and Dan Furman andtheir daughter Becky, Brian and Amy McDougall, Paul Pryzbyla, and John and PollyRounds. The Trustees of Reservations (TTOR) provided valuable assistance.Trail improvements and other routine property maintenance continued on conservationparcels with the help of volunteers. We are grateful to the Shirley Boy Scouts and GirlScouts who help every year. Sunrise Stables has also generously maintained trailsconnecting Shirley and Lunenburg. Trail maps created by volunteer Ward Baxter areavailable at the Conservation Commission office. Black-and-white trail maps are free ofcharge.Due to fiscal constraints, no money has been added to the Open Space Acquisition Fundvia Town Meeting vote since June 13, 2000. This account is used not only for acquisitionbut also for maintenance of existing town-owned open space parcels and for updating theOpen Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP).Students from the Conway School of Landscape Design were hired to update a significantportion of Shirley’s OSRP. Thanks to their excellent effort, the document isapproximately 90% complete. The 2011 Fall Foliage Walk took place on October 23 on a cool, cloudy day. The Trusteesof Reservations, which now owns Farandnear, provided parking for the walk.Representing TTOR was Dan Stephens, long-time groundskeeper for Farandnear. ArthurBanks' passing meant this was the first walk at which he was not there to greet walkers.TTOR is still in its planning stage and plans to open the property soon, free of charge tothe public. John Rounds escorted the longer walk. An important destination of the longerwalk this year was the newly purchased Old Town Line Conservation Area. At the end ofthe walk, the Field family, represented this year by Alison Field-Juma, providedrefreshments. Thank you to all those who helped make this walk happen.Longley Acres Conservation AreaThe Longley Acres Conservation Area on Whitney Road, which was acquired inApril 2003, is under the care, custody, and control of the Conservation Commission. The94
present caretakers, Steve and Kim Hampson, can be reached at 978-761-3406 or 978-761-5824 or at longleyacres@ymail.comIn FY12 the Commission reached a long-term hay field lease agreement and renewed thecaretaker agreement. A new sign designating the conservation area was installed near theLongley farmhouse on Whitney Road. The Commission continued to focus on maintenance needs for the house and barn in orderto preserve the site and buildings and to prevent deterioration and ensure user safety.Maintenance projects in FY12 included new siding and repairs to the barn. The Community Garden at Longley Acres was established in 2010 to provide access toplots for local gardeners. In FY12 the Community Garden began cooperating withGrowing Places Garden Project of Clinton, MA, to enable low income families to learnabout growing their own food.We continue to sell As Seasons Change: A Collection of Poems by Melvin ProctorLongley, Sr. The Longley family compiled the poems and generously donated allproceeds from the first edition to the Longley Acres Maintenance Fund. We also stillhave copies of Betsy Colburn's must-have reference Vernal Pools: Natural History andConservation. These two books are still available at the Conservation office. The Longley Acres property has been entirely self-sufficient to date, with improvementspaid for by a combination of donations, hay sales, book sales, and grants.
