H4DAFSingle ShotIn Single Shot setting (AF S), the shutter release will be blocked until the camera findsthe optimum focus setting. This ensures that no captures can be made that are not finelyfocused. However, this delay will normally be only a fraction of a second in good lightingconditions with a clear focusing pattern.Note though that in this mode the lens will focus at a distance and will remain focusedat that distance while pressure remains on the shutter release button. In this way, youcan focus on a nearby object for example, temporarily positioned within the focusingzone on the viewing screen and then without releasing pressure on the shutter releasebutton, recompose knowing that the focus remains on the object chosen even thoughit is now outside the focusing zone. Releasing the pressure on the shutter release buttonand pressing again half way would now change the focus setting to the distance of theobject within the focusing zone.See under ‘Manual override in autofocus mode’ for a useful way of working with manualand autofocus settings in a combined manner.23FContinuousAt Continuous setting (AF C), the shutter can be released rapidly before the lens is focusedin order to capture a split-second shot (in Single Shot, a capture cannot be madeuntil the camera has had time to focus). However, the camera will continue to focus if amoving subject is within the focusing zone or if you recompose, even though the shutterrelease button is half pressed. One method to exploit this feature when photographing in a rapidly changing situationsuch as photojournalism, for example, is to keep the shutter release button presseddown. In this way the lens focuses constantly (according to the focusing zone) and bymomentarily releasing the pressure on the shutter release and then immediately pressingagain, you minimize the amount of time needed for the lens to check focus, thusensuring a split-second shot at optimum focus.NoteISO / WBSaveFor users who prefer manual focuscontrol but would like the benefitsof autofocus, one method is to setthe AE-L button (or anuy user button)to AF (Single) drive. The main subject can then becentered and the AE-L pressed, toensure correct focus. The camerareverts immediately to manualfocus control when the button isreleased. Therefore, you can recompose thepicture without having to maintainpressure on the release button inorder to retain the newly automaticallymade focus setting (AF-T canalso be used).True FocusThe True Focus setting (AF T) is generally used in specific circumstances to automaticallycorrect for camera angle/focus setting discrepancies. It can also be combined with AF C,AF C and M. See below for full description.Focus modeFocus mode is set via the control wheels in the following manner:In camera active mode:1) Press the AF button on the grip.2) Turn the front control wheel to: Single Shot, Continuous, True Focus orManual as required.3) Press Save (ISO/WB button) to store the setting.Manual override in autofocus modeManual override is always possible in automatic focus mode without any need to make anew setting; just rotate the focusing ring in the conventional manner. As the lens barreldoes not rotate in autofocus mode, you can hold the focusing ring for instant manualadjustments as you would with a conventional lens. However, to retain the new manualfocus adjustments, you must maintain the pressure on the shutter release button. Youcan instantly return to the automatic focusing mode by releasing the pressure on theshutter release button first and then pressing the release button halfway again. The instant manual override facility produces a convenient way of working. You can takeadvantage of autofocus while retaining an instantly adjustable manual focus check ifpreferred for pin-point accuracy without making any changes in the settings.31
