ResultsI. BIOLOGY AND TAXONOMY OFVAM FUNGI IN SAND DUNESA. PLANT SPECIESMYCORRHIZAL STATUSMost individual VAM fungal specieswere not restricted to any individualplant species present on the dunes(TABLE 1). As many as nine differentVAM fungal species occurred on oneplant host (Agropyron inerme), <strong>and</strong> oneVAM fungal species (Glomus dominkii)formed mycorrhizal associations with 10different plant species (TABLE 1).The list of major plant species collectedfrom the s<strong>and</strong> dunes during 1987 <strong>and</strong>1988 is given in TABLE 1. All 23 plantspecies investigated at the North Parks<strong>and</strong> dunes form VAM associations(TABLE 1). This list is not ordered byplant species abundance. However, thelist gives an indication of the plantcommunity structure <strong>and</strong> VAMassociations.B. GENERA AND SPECIES FOUNDTABLE 1 contains a list of genera <strong>and</strong>species of VAM fungi <strong>and</strong> theiroccurrence on plant species in the NorthPark s<strong>and</strong> dunes. A total of 29 fungalspecies were identified. Fungi includespecies of Glomus, Gigaspora,Scutellospora, <strong>and</strong> Entrophospora.Glomus spp. are the most abundant <strong>and</strong>occur on over of 90% of the plantspecies. Scutellospora spp. are the nextmost abundant <strong>and</strong> occur on over 50% ofthe plants present. Entrophospora spp.occurs on 13% of the plants present.Gigaspora is the least abundant genus;never-the-less, this genus occurs onabout 9% of the major plant speciespresent.
