SKYTEAM EXPANDS ITS PRESENCE IN ASIA<br />
China Eastern <strong>Airlines</strong> and its<br />
subsidiary Shanghai <strong>Airlines</strong> have<br />
officially joined SkyTeam in June<br />
2011 to become the 14th member of<br />
the global airline alliance. Passengers<br />
of China Eastern and its subsidiary<br />
Shanghai <strong>Airlines</strong> will now<br />
have access to SkyTeam’s network<br />
of 13,133 flights daily while it adds<br />
32 new destinations in China and<br />
the Asia-Pacific region to the network,<br />
including Macau and<br />
Colombo.<br />
China <strong>Airlines</strong>, Taiwan’s biggest airline<br />
based in Taipei, is also expected<br />
to join the alliance at the end of this<br />
year. This fact shows that SkyTeam<br />
is a major alliance, specially in Asia-<br />
Pacific region. As such, the alliance<br />
has been growing its presence in<br />
Asia, with <strong>Vietnam</strong> <strong>Airlines</strong> and<br />
Tarom of Roumani getting their official<br />
membership in June, 2010.<br />
The International Air Transport Association<br />
said that Asia’s transportation<br />
air market, especially in China,<br />
will grow rapidly in coming years.<br />
Since 2009 the air transportation<br />
market in Asia has become bigger<br />
than the market in North America.<br />
Effective immediately, from June<br />
2011 Golden Lotus Plus members<br />
can earn and redeem frequent<br />
flyer miles when boarding flights<br />
by China Eastern <strong>Airlines</strong> and<br />
Shanghai <strong>Airlines</strong>.<br />
