Fort William is the largest town
in the West Highlands of
Scotland and is an area renowned for magnificent scenery with an
important history. The region proudly boasts the highest
mountain in the UK – Ben Nevis, and Loch Morar – the deepest
loch, with beautiful glens, forests and beaches in between.
YOUR ITINERARY:
Wednesday 28th: We head north over the Scottish
Boarders and on to the Hotel in Fort William, with time to
relax before you sit down to enjoy your evening meal.
Thursday 29th: Full Day on the Jacobite Stream Train
described as one of the great railway journeys of the world,
this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive
extremes. It starts near the highest mountain in Britain
(Ben Nevis), visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway
station (Arisaig), then passes close by the deepest
freshwater loch in Britain (Loch Morar), and the shortest
river in Britain (River Morar) and finally arrives next to the
deepest seawater loch in Europe – Loch Nevis. The train
leaves Fort William at 10:20am and returns to Fort William
YOUR ITINERARY:
Thursday 2nd: We leave our home area and travel over the
border into Scotland to Pitlochry and check-in to the Fishers
Hotel for overnight dinner, bed and breakfast
accommodation. The hotel lies on the main street in
Pitlochry close to the shops yet enjoys the tranquillity of two
acres of award winning private gardens. Guests can sit by the
fountain or enjoy the putting green. The hotel has elegant
lounges with log fires and a snooker room as well as an à la
carte restaurant.
Friday 3rd: Following a full Scottish breakfast we head
north over the Cairngorms and via Inverness to Thurso and
check-in at the Royal Hotel, located in the centre of Thurso,
one of the most northerly towns in Mainland Scotland.
Formerly a coaching Inn, this hotel has been upgraded and
enlarged over the years but still retains its charm from days
gone by. Situated in the town centre, all amenities, including
an interesting selection of shops, are within easy walking
distance.
Saturday 4th: We spend the next two nights on board
Northlink Ferries on a Dinner Bed & Breakfast basis in
ensuite cabins. After breakfast at the hotel, we head to the
Jacobite Steam Experience – Fort William
at 4:00pm with an hour and
a half in Mallaig. The train
also stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan
where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745.
After crossing the world famous 21 arch Glenfinnan
viaduct, which has been used in the Harry Potter movies,
and offers wonderful views down Loch Shiel, the train
stops at the station giving you time to stretch your legs and
visit the Museum in the station buildings. On a clear
summer’s day from Arisaig you can see the “Small Isles” of
Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye.
From there the train passes Morar and the silvery beaches
used in the films “Highlander” and “Local Hero” The final
destination is of course Mallaig. Not only an access point to
