The Grand Hotel, Bristol ★★★★
Located in the city centre, The Grand is a quiet haven in the
heart of buzzing Bristol. The Grand (formerly known as Thistle
Bristol) dates from the Victorian age, when local hero IK Brunel
reshaped Bristol – and the world – with engineering feats like the
Clifton Suspension Bridge and SS Great Britain. In a city that’s no
stranger to major feats of construction we’ve been engaged in
extensive refurbishment works of our own. We’ve completed
refurbishment of the majority of our bedrooms and have fully
refurbished our spectacular Wessex Suite and Grand Ballroom
resulting in a more modern and contemporary look and feel
whilst retaining the hotel’s Victorian charm.
of Wales’ Charity Highgrove shop at an exclusive out
of hours opening with a glass of Highgrove Estate
wine for everyone and a special Highgrove souvenir
per couple. The new shop in Tetbury follows the
success of the shop at Highgrove House and will sell
an extended range of Highgrove gifts. All profits from
the shop go to charity and are channelled into The
Prince’s Charities Foundation.
We return to our hotel for a late evening meal.
Sunday 18th: This morning we visit Cheddar and
Wells before returning to Bristol for a sightseeing
cruise around the historical harbour – fascinating for
its history and Bristol connections, enlivened by the
widest High
Streets in the country. The town has an excellent
selection of shops, pubs and cafes in the High Street and
the various fascinating back alleys and small courtyards
with medieval timber framed houses which escaped the
great fire. We continue on to the charming Market town
Devizes in the centre of the county. The town surrounds
the site of the first castle built by the Bishop of Salisbury
in 1080 and said to have been the finest castle in Europe
at the time. The town has many fine Georgian houses and
is home to Wadworths, one of the largest family breweries
still operating in the country. Local pubs still receive their
supplies by horse and dray.
