Chapter 2: Summary Message• The process of brownfield regeneration involves numerous stakeholders atvarious stages of the process• Different stakeholder objectives can affect the regeneration process• The process of regeneration is affected by local, national and Europeandrivers and barriers• Regenerating brownfields can be a more complex process than greenfielddevelopment or urban regeneration• A lack of shared understanding amongst stakeholders can significantly affectthe regeneration process• A lack of coordination between local, national and European strategies canimpede sustainable regeneration• Multi-stakeholder engagement and participation is needed in all aspects ofthe regeneration process• Pan-European multi-stakeholder dialogue can help practitioners deal withlocal issues by sharing knowledge and defining good practice• The exchange of national problem solving experience can also informEU policy initiatives on the urban environment. This helps to createinstruments that empower European cities working in a global market whilestill maintaining the important aspects of subsidiarity• The <strong>CABERNET</strong> <strong>Network</strong> had four overarching objectives: a) better awarenessand shared understanding of brownfield issues across stakeholder groupsthroughout Europe; b) conceptual models for a variety brownfield issues; c)coordinated research and training activities across different sectorsand countries; d) the identification of best practice approaches and othertools• <strong>CABERNET</strong> has produced four main outcomes: (1) Shared good practiceknowledge through the provisional Case Studies (2) Conceptual Models (3)Policy and Practice Recommendations (4) Research Recommendations16
