Z4 knows how to do it in less than half that time, watchingthe roof of the Bentley Azure hide away exposing the magnificentinterior, is like a small ceremony in its own right.The inside is dominated by four massive armchairs in premiumhide trim and the rest of the interior is all high qualitywood and other exclusive materials, with Bang&Olufsenaudiosystem... Classically designed central consolehides all amenities of modern technologies beneath itsrustical appearance, while still oozing with aristocraticsuperiority.When it comes to tooling around in this 2,7 tonne behemoth,one does’t need to worry. In contrast to thenew Bentley Continental, whose W12 twin-turbochargedheart descends from the same genepool as thatof a Volkswagen Phaeton, the Azure’s propulsion is providedby the thundering 6,75-litre V8 that has, in oneform or another, been motivating Bentleys and Rollerssince 1959.A true dinosaur of engine-building, modified over theyears to somewhat approach modern standards of engineemmisions and equipped with two huge turbochargers,delivers 456 horsepowers to the rear wheelsthrough the ancient four-speed automatic gearshift.With the incredible torque of 875 Nm, no high-techwonders are necessary here, really. Immense powercarries Azure from 0 to 100 km/h in only 6,3 seconds,inexorably pushing it to the top speed of 270 km/h. Fuelconsumption of 30-ish litres on every hundred kilometersis considered quite normal, regarding the Azure’sstature and power.But only while driving the thing, it becomes apparent justhow good a job Bentley made with the new Azure. Theprevious Azure’s major downside was the lack of structuralrigidity, which is always a problem when a monocoquecar has its roof removed. By inovative crosswisemounting of carbonfibre reinforcements, the new Azurehas a 300% increase of structural rigidity in comparisonto the old model. Fantastically tuned suspension enablessurprisingly agile handling for such a large and heavycar. Still, Bentley Azure is most at home while cruisingwith its top down, preferrably somewhere where beingseen is just as important as seeing.One more thing - in case the clients have special wishes,or the ‘’regular’’ Azure just isn’t exclusive enoughfor them, in comes the Mulliner. It is Bentley’s companytuner, in charge of fulfilling even the most extreme requestsof the clients.
