It will become apparent that what I identify as "high development theory" is essentially the nexus among the external economy/balanced growth debate, the concept of linkages, and the surplus labor doctrine. This era began with Rosenstein-Rodan (1943) and more or less ended with Hirschman (1958). Obviously this nexus does not cover all of what was happening in the field of development economics even at that time, but it is the core of what I believe needs to be recaptured. 3.
