Autumn in NorwayFrom the Director:Time marches on, and “ISS-time” seems to marchalong at an ever quicker pace.As I write this piece, the staff has just finished itsannual two-day in-service training. And just whatdoes happen during those two days off school forstudents? What do the teachers do during those daysanyway? While I am pleased to say that I have nothad any parents ever question the need for taking inservicedays, the hard work that takes place both priorto, during and after those days is worth sharing. In its Vision Statement, the school expresses that, “TheISS vision is to prepare students for greater globalparticipation by helping them become responsible, empowered learners.” So how, exactly, does thathappen? Do our three principals and myself simplywave a proverbial magic wand over the faculty andautomatically that virtual magic transfers itself ontoour teachers and then onto your children? No, it is not that simple—the ongoing “magic” thatoccurs in our classrooms on a daily basis happensbecause our teachers and administrators work hardtogether to create, revise and update curriculumthat will advance learning in the classroom for everystudent at their varied needs. And by the way, it was not a coincidence that Ididn’t refer to the word “perfect” when discussingschool curriculum. School curriculum is an evolvingorganism and is truly never “finished.”ISS, founded in 1966, has been working oncurriculum-writing for a long time and the workcontinues. Some of what happens in our classroomsschool-wide, of course, is informed by the syllabi fromthe International Baccalaureate Diploma programmeour 11th and 12th graders follow, or by the syllabifrom the University of Cambridge for the IGCSEprogramme for our 9th and 10th grade students. We have a system of curricular leadership throughoutthe school with a positive middle-managementstructure that includes 21 faculty members who leadcurriculum teams covering all the different disciplinesthat we teach. Against the backdrop of all thisongoing work, we use the two days of in-service forconcentrated advancement of our goals. We have often brought in an outside facilitator toassist our process of self-examination. This year thethree principals selected Ms. Cynthia Ruptic for thattask and she spent two very productive days with ourstaff. Ms. Ruptic has a long career in education. Herinternational education career includes teaching in2 · The In f o r m e r 6 Oc t o b e r 2010 www.isstavanger.no

At the end of thesecond day, each teacher was asked to write down“POMS—Point of Most Significance.” Here are a fewof the phrases shared:• ”[I appreciated] the time to look together as agroup at the curriculum.• Collaborative work with colleagues can be veryhelpful.• 1.)Once you start, you can’t stop. 2.) Board BriefTigger is on the loose! The Board of Trustees has looked back at last year’sfinances, and is pleased to report a good financialyear 2009-10, meeting budget targets with a healthyplanned surplus of 4mln NOK.For the 2010-11 year the school is well on track withenrolment numbers close to projected, aiming for asimilar surplus. This surplus is a sound grounding for the expansionproject, which is progressing so far on schedule.Safety is our priority during construction, and itis good to see staff, parents and students, as wellas construction staff, respect safe behaviour andpractices. To date, there have been no incidents, and weaim to keep it that way with regular inspectionsand feedback. Successful implementation of theexpansion project is one of the goals and targets thatBoard and Administration have set for the new year,as is the significant upgrade of IT infrastructure. Our mission as a school is “...to provide educationin a supportive, academically stimulating and multiculturalenvironment, ... enabling our students tolive as responsible and contributing citizens in theglobal community”.The school expansion and up-to-date (andappropriate) information technology are key to ourmission. Already most of you will be familiar withEDline, our new school portal; and many classroomscan access more new laptops. Some details of thenew infrastructure still need ironing out, but thatshould be the case by November.Andrew Rhodes, our new Technology Director, willshare his experience and views with the Board nextmonth. News from the Health, Security, Safety and Environment (HSSE) CommitteeMs Sølve Ims Ottesen SiOttesen@isstavanger.noAnother month passed by.Glad to say that we have had no severe incidents this schoolyear, neither at the construction site nor at school. At the construction site, the main challenge until nowhas been the detection of undefined waste at the areawhere new parking place will be. This has caused a delayin constructing the parking place. In week 39 we had an unannounced fire evacuation. This was due to steam in the theatre. And where did thesteam come from? From people pressing some costumes!Although it was an unplanned building evacuation, thepractice was one more good opportunity to practicesafety. The HSSE committee has 2 new members: Jean-PaulKoninx and Jonathan Crane, both from the Boardof Trustees. We welcome them and look forward tothe cooperation. The committee does not plan anycomprehensive projects this year; the extension willdemand a high level of focus. But two items that we will deal with, are:1.2.Test the air quality in some of the rooms.Plan for additional emergency drills.Sølve Ims OttesenHSSE Coordinatorwww.isstavanger.noThe In f o r m e r 6 Oc t o b e r 2010 · 25
