From the Director:“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life bywhat we give.”It was my pleasure to be invited by the folks at NATO lastweek to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism that is alive andwell in our community. The US Military contingent sponsoreda tea in conjunction with National Volunteer Week, whichis observed in the US April 19 th -25 th . I used that wonderfulquote above by Winston Churchill in my remarks at that event. The sentiment is the same as I extend it to all of our parents aswell. The International School of Stavanger lives, breathes andrevels in the volunteerism that we have watched in action formany years. We have many “high-profile” volunteers here atISS and many others who perform their work quietly behindthe scenes—literally avoiding the limelight. And to all thoseindividuals, I have a special responsibility to see that they arenot forgotten.Perhaps a point that I should mention is that everyone who haschosen to enroll their children at ISS is a volunteer. You havevolunteered to place your most cherished possessions—yourchildren—in our hands for some of the best hours of their lives. We are not the only educational option for you in this town andon a daily basis I am grateful for that vote of trust. It is very important that I do not take the generous gift of timethat so many devote to the school for granted and so I extenda very, very sincere thanks and debt of gratitude to all current, past and future volunteers. We are a better school because ofyou!Have you ordered your yearbook yet? Our yearbook staff andtheir wonderful advisor, Ms. Kaatje deGruyter, have once againmade all their deadlines in perfect timing and the publishingcompany is currently doing their work so the books will arrivein time for the end of the year. The yearbook staff is nowworking on a CD of pictures of all the spring activities thattake place too late to be included in the hardback publication. The yearbook staff will be running another pre-publicationsale, and so we recommend that you order ahead to avoid beingdisappointed should they run out. Given the success of lastyear’s book, plus the quality of what I have seen as it has beenprepared for publication, I believe everyone will be delightedwith the result of the staff’s hard work.ISS students in action in the 17th of May parade last yearAnd just why might you be interested in having a yearbook...well, you just never know when one of your classmates turnsout to be famous! An example that I’ll share today is a studentwho we called Jay Rathbone when he attended ISS in 1992-1995 when he spent 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th grades here. Today, he isknown throughout the world as Jackson Rathbone, and forJasper Hale, the character he plays in the “Twilight” movies.Never heard of either Jackson Rathbone or “Twilight?” Asknearly any available teenager and they can probably fill you in!His second grade teacher at ISS, Mrs. Jeanene Gay is not theleast bit surprised by the 841,000 hits that come up on Googlefor him, “How could anyone forget Jay! He was one of the starsin our ’Shoemaker and the Elves’ Christmas production.” Socongratulations, Jay/Jackson—we wish him continued successand it was great fun looking him up in the ISS yearbooks.2 · The In f o r m e r 29 Ap r i l 2009 www.isstavanger.no

(Jump Rope Club and Student Council were two of his extracurriculars!)And remember to order your own yearbook forthe 2008-2009 school year—memories are a cherished and funpart of life!Inside this issue of the Informer you will find all kinds ofinformation, including the results of the annual Unge Forskere(Young Researchers) competition in Oslo. As I write this, ourtwo national finalists, Kirsten Peacock and Mateen Ram, areover in Oslo taking part in the event. The final outcome willbe included in IB Coordinator Ms. Lynn Park’s article inside.Congratulations, Kirsten and Mateen. We also extend our congratulations to all the ISS musicians whotook part in the Band Concert at school last week—the concertwas remarkable! Early the next morning, our Middle SchoolHonor Choir left for Moscow and the international schoolsmusical festival there. And on the following evening, anotherremarkable sight was the IB Visual Arts class exhibition whichwas staged at Tou Scene in Stavanger. A wonderfully largecrowd attended both events and our students excelled in theartistic spotlight.Coming up soon, you will be receiving a letter in the mailwith full details on your students taking part in the May 17Norwegian Constitution Day parade. Although this year, itfalls on a Sunday, it is a regular school day for us and for yourchildren—although we will only keep them until the end ofthe parade. This year the Children’s Parade (Barnetoget), startsdowntown as normal and winds its way to the ending pointon the corner of Holbergsgaten and Steingata in the Eiganesneighborhood. Full details and a map will be sent through themail to each home in the next week.Last autumn, I promised one of our parents that I would writea bit about some of the other activities that fill out May 17 th sothat parents could think about how to use the day when themorning parade finishes. When the Children’s Parade ends, there is still a whole day filled with activities for you and yourfamily to enjoy. Each family will be sent a brochure that outlinesthe time schedule for the day and what is happening in yourneighborhood. Stavanger Kommune sends us the brochures inthe week leading up the 17 th and we’ll send them home so bewatching for it. Here are some of the Duevel family favorites:--In our neighborhood, as in many others, after the Barnetogetthere is an “everybody join-in-parade” where neighbors andfamilies walk informally behind the local school band usuallyending up at a old folks’ home for the band to serenade theoccupants and then carry on to the local school playground orchurch yard for children’s relay races, games, speeches, moremusic and refreshments.--The next stop for us is always the Russtoget, which is theparade for the red- and blue-suited graduates. You never quiteknow just what you will see, but it is never dull. That paradestarts at the old Viking stadium in Eiganes and heads alongEiganesveien toward the center of Stavanger.--Then on to a wonderful highlight—the international festivalat Bjergsted. Sponsored by International House, this wonderfulwww.isstavanger.nogathering gets bigger and better every year. Food stalls frommany countries provide a great lunch, along with entertainmentfrom around the world. Come hungry!--The third and final parade of the day is the Folketoget orPeople’s Parade. This year, it will start in downtown Stavangerand end up in the Storhaug neighborhood. It is filled withclubs, activities, congregations of every kind—music, color andlots of fun!The above list only touches upon some of the activities—thereare many more, starting at 07.00 and carrying on until late inthe evening. And this year, because the 17 th falls on a Sunday, there will undoubtedly be extra activities as well sponsored bylocal churches. And, of course, each kommune will have its ownspecial blend of events to mark Norway’s Constitution Day.Ask your friends and neighbors how their family spends theday—there are many variations, and nearly each one will befamily-friendly. Dress up—but wear comfortable shoes—andenjoy the fun!On May 18, 19 and 20, we are looking forward to hosting Mr.Andy Hill from the Council of International Schools and Dr.Samuel Robinson from the New England Association of Schoolsand Colleges. They are representing their organizations in thefive-year accreditation visit to the school. What is accreditation? It is. . . “a system of accountability that is ongoing, voluntary, andcomprehensive in scope. It respects differences in institutionalpopulations, missions, and cultures, and fosters institutionalchange grounded in the judgment of practicing educators. It isbased on standards which are developed and regularly reviewedby the members and which define the characteristics of goodschools and colleges.” (NEASC)Our accreditation cycle spans ten years, and includes a full selfstudywhich a visiting team of twelve educators uses as theycome and view every aspect of the school and its operations.Following their visit, they issue recommendations which must beresponded to within one year. At the five year point, the schoolmust submit another report responding to the recommendationsissued earlier and also explaining changes which have occurredand indicating intended future actions. The five year point alsocoincides with a two-person team coming to visit the school. Our five year report has already been sent in and next Mr. Hilland Dr. Robinson will spend three days in the school immersingthemselves and considering how far we have come in our goalsand how we are structuring ourselves to face future goals. Theyare very welcome in our ongoing work to improve what theschool can offer.Springtime in Stavanger! So much to do, so much to be done! Thanks for everything you are doing in connection with yourchildren! All the best to you and your family,Dr. Linda DuevelDirectorLDuevel@isstavanger.noThe In f o r m e r 29 Ap r i l 2009 · 3

No school buses will run on those days. Every year I am amazed by the creative talent andskills of our students, and enjoy viewing their work. However, this year is something really special. I will let Ms Jeane Svihus, who guides our students through their artistic explorations, explain a little more. “This year the IB Visual Art class has had theopportunity to exhibit at one of the region’s largest visual and performing arts centers, Tou Scene. Every spring the IB year twostudents put up an exhibition to which an examiner comes and assesses their work. This group is so big this year (11 students)that it was necessary to find a location outside of school. It has been very exciting to experience a new space, and one in whichprofessional artists and performers use. The students have done a fabulous job creating art over the last two years, and with thehelp of their parents mounted an impressive exhibit.”The students have the opportunity to spend about half an hour showing the visiting examiner around their exhibit, discussingtheir work. In addition, an open exhibition was held in the evening of Wednesday 22nd April, to allow parents and friends toadmire the students’ artwork. There cannot be many young artists who have the privilege of mounting a personal retrospectiveexhibition in such a prestigious gallery space!Unge forskere and Fritt Ord competitions 2009Each year, our IB Diploma students become experts in one aspect of their IB studies through the ‘Extended Essay’. With thesupport and gentle guidance of a supervisor at the school, students explore a theme of their own choice, and write a research paperof up to 4000 words. This is perhaps one of the most important parts of the IB Diploma, and many ISS alumni have commentedon how easy it was for them to tackle research papers at university, in comparison with their friends from other educationalsystems, because of the experience of writing the Extended Essay. We are always very proud of our students’ achievements, butit is also extremely gratifying to find that others also appreciate the work that they do on these research projects. This year, two students were invited to Oslo for the final of national competitions. Mateen Ram won third prize inUngdomskonkurransen Fritt Ord, a competition which looks at aspects of free speech. Mateen’s essay, ‘The path we choose totake in life…’ examined the writing and speeches of three great world leaders of the last century: Shoghi Effendi, Martin LutherKing, and Nelson Mandela. He explains that he particularly focused on how ‘these three diverse leaders used the metaphorsof light and darkness to portray the battle between the forces of good and evil’. Kirsten Peacock won a second prize in thehumanities section of the Konkurransen Unge Forskere (the Young Researchers competition), with her essay on ‘The FemaleVillain’. She studied the characters of Medea, Lady Macbeth and Hedda Gabler – three famous female villains coming fromclassical Greek theatre, Shakespeare’s tragedies, and Ibsen’s modern drama. Kirsten explains that in these works the playwrightmakes a conscious choice to use a female villain, and that ‘she is more harshly judged than a male might be’ resulting in ‘theinevitable downfall of the women’.The finalists (chosen this year from 129 entries in the two competitions) exhibited their research projects at the Nordisk TekniskMuseum in Oslo and enjoyed a programme of events including a formal dinner at the famous Holmenkollen Restaurant in thehills above Oslo.More information about these, and other competitions, can be found on http://konkurransene.no/ andthen follow the links.Lynn ParkExam Coordinatorwww.isstavanger.noThe In f o r m e r 29 Ap r i l 2009 · 7

Jakob and Dina have dropped everything to enjoy a moment of reading togetherPrimary School NewsLeonie and Sophie take five during PEWe were so pleased with the children’s involvement in ourreading incentive of finding a friend in a book. The incentiveconcluded with a day of Drop Everything and Read. It was funto see so many students so involved in books. There is sucha positive feeling that surfaces when everyone is reading. Itshows we value reading and this rubs off on reading skills asmotivation to read increases. Thank you to everyone involvedin making this such a success.Thank you as well for everyone helping with the many events inand out of school. Primary School track and field has started, and the Primary School musical is just around the corner. I havehad an opportunity to see the community teamwork of teachers, parents and students offering over 100 students an opportunityto learn track and field skills and pulling all the many facetsof the musical production together. Join the students at one ormore of the performances on 7-9 May. The students appreciateseeing you in the audience, and for this musical you will get ahistory lesson.Toward the end of the school year, some tasks become moreand more difficult, and this is a good time to work on resilience. In the book, Mindsets, researcher Carol Dweck at StanfordUniversity has suggested a focus on praise for effort over praisefor intelligence. If looking smart is most important, thenstudents tend to think that the essential thing about schoolwork is to show how good one is at it. If learning is moreimportant, then it is more important to learn concepts andskills in classes than to get the best grades. Put another way, ifa student says the assignment was too easy, perhaps we shouldsay we are sorry we wasted that time, and suggest somethingwe could do that could help them learn more. Dweck suggestswe help develop attitudes that the harder we work at something, the better we get at it. The difficulty is that if we focus on beingsmart, we have a tendency to lose resilience when we encountera deficiency or difficult task. We need to learn how to maintainconfidence when facing challenges and setbacks. When a childdoes something well, we could praise by saying how smart thechild is, but Dweck suggests we praise by saying, “Wow, that’sa really good score. You must have tried really hard.” When achild doesn’t succeed, the focus should be on embracing thechallenge and learning from mistakes.Spring is here with the end of our reading incentive and somany activities in and out of school time. Each of the activitiesis important, and yet we need to focus on the core curriculumareas to ensure children gain essential skills to continue tosucceed. One of the most important ways parents help in theselast months of school is keeping a regular routine for gettingenough sleep. This can be a daunting task with evenings thatare light so late. Routine is often the key to getting to bed, nomatter how light it is outside. We hope they all continue swimming during their time at the university. We will miss you all.NECIS Coaches: Ms. Cheryl Hogarth, Mr.Taylor Cox and Ms Rianne HettemaWhat a fantastic trip in Sigtuna! We were all very excited for the competition, but also for theflight. The first day, after we arrived, we visited Sigtuna, wentshopping, and ended the day in an Italian restaurant to eatpizza. The second day was a bit more exciting than the first, wewoke up at 6:15 in the morning (not too exciting) and after wehad breakfast we walked over to the pool. We were thrilled toparticipate in such an important event, with many schools torace against. After the warm-up the races started, so the onesthat had the race that was about to start, got prepared. The races went on for the whole day, from about 7:30 or 8:00a.m. until maybe 5:00p.m. We were cheering, some practicingand some of course, racing. At the end of the races, we had someplay-time in the in the fun pool with slides next door. Aftersliding and swimming, we returned to the hotel, had dinner, then… disco night! The next day we woke up as usual, andwalked to the pool again. That day was my busy + lucky day! Many students on the I.S.S team won a ribbon, or even a medal. It was so exciting to end your race and then discover that yougot second place, won a silver medal and got to stand on thepodium, with the other finalists. That day we also had to leave,a bit sad, but then got instantly happy again as we noticed theStockholm duty free.We landed in the Sola airport in Stavanger at about 10:00 p.m.,with chocolate, toblerones, mnms and tired but happy smiles.VirginiaNECIS Swimming – Sweden 2009It was this year, 2009, that I travelled to my second swim meetwith the Viking Swim Team, ISS, to the scenic country ofSweden, Uppsala, where we were welcomed with open arms.Swimming with my friends and NECIS swimmers this year wasa pure joy and I felt that this year especially, our team bondedtogether, eager to meet new people and friends, as well as oldrivals. The team spirit and vibe was amazing and many personalbests were beaten! Our NECIS team returned with many medals and ribbons;one gold, sixteen silver and seventeen bronze medals, as wellas countless ribbons making our trip impressive as well as aspectacular event for us all! This year we had awesome facilities(the pool was huge) with a fantastic atmosphere. Our team notonly consisted of strong individual swimmers, but also of teamplayers who took up a role in bringing each other together and Ibelieve we all did a great job being role models throughout thecompetition. Going down-town and visiting some of the city, cathedral, shopping areas and eating at the pizzaria was also atime to relax and explore Sweden. What I also find remarkableabout these swim-meets is the amount of new people you meetfrom all over the globe, with different cultures, ideas and ageshowever, united under the NECIS sport, with the hope ofachieving and being their very best.I also know that this great swim meet would not have beenpossible without the continual support and help of our greatcoaches, Ms. Hettema, Ms. Hogarth and Mr. Cox as well asall the other fantastic trainers!
