From the Director:“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life bywhat we give.”It was my pleasure to be invited by the folks at NATO lastweek to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism that is alive andwell in our community. The US Military contingent sponsoreda tea in conjunction with National Volunteer Week, whichis observed in the US April 19 th -25 th . I used that wonderfulquote above by Winston Churchill in my remarks at that event. The sentiment is the same as I extend it to all of our parents aswell. The International School of Stavanger lives, breathes andrevels in the volunteerism that we have watched in action formany years. We have many “high-profile” volunteers here atISS and many others who perform their work quietly behindthe scenes—literally avoiding the limelight. And to all thoseindividuals, I have a special responsibility to see that they arenot forgotten.Perhaps a point that I should mention is that everyone who haschosen to enroll their children at ISS is a volunteer. You havevolunteered to place your most cherished possessions—yourchildren—in our hands for some of the best hours of their lives. We are not the only educational option for you in this town andon a daily basis I am grateful for that vote of trust. It is very important that I do not take the generous gift of timethat so many devote to the school for granted and so I extenda very, very sincere thanks and debt of gratitude to all current, past and future volunteers. We are a better school because ofyou!Have you ordered your yearbook yet? Our yearbook staff andtheir wonderful advisor, Ms. Kaatje deGruyter, have once againmade all their deadlines in perfect timing and the publishingcompany is currently doing their work so the books will arrivein time for the end of the year. The yearbook staff is nowworking on a CD of pictures of all the spring activities thattake place too late to be included in the hardback publication. The yearbook staff will be running another pre-publicationsale, and so we recommend that you order ahead to avoid beingdisappointed should they run out. Given the success of lastyear’s book, plus the quality of what I have seen as it has beenprepared for publication, I believe everyone will be delightedwith the result of the staff’s hard work.ISS students in action in the 17th of May parade last yearAnd just why might you be interested in having a yearbook...well, you just never know when one of your classmates turnsout to be famous! An example that I’ll share today is a studentwho we called Jay Rathbone when he attended ISS in 1992-1995 when he spent 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th grades here. Today, he isknown throughout the world as Jackson Rathbone, and forJasper Hale, the character he plays in the “Twilight” movies.Never heard of either Jackson Rathbone or “Twilight?” Asknearly any available teenager and they can probably fill you in!His second grade teacher at ISS, Mrs. Jeanene Gay is not theleast bit surprised by the 841,000 hits that come up on Googlefor him, “How could anyone forget Jay! He was one of the starsin our ’Shoemaker and the Elves’ Christmas production.” Socongratulations, Jay/Jackson—we wish him continued successand it was great fun looking him up in the ISS yearbooks.2 · The In f o r m e r 29 Ap r i l 2009 www.isstavanger.no
(Jump Rope Club and Student Council were two of his extracurriculars!)And remember to order your own yearbook forthe 2008-2009 school year—memories are a cherished and funpart of life!Inside this issue of the Informer you will find all kinds ofinformation, including the results of the annual Unge Forskere(Young Researchers) competition in Oslo. As I write this, ourtwo national finalists, Kirsten Peacock and Mateen Ram, areover in Oslo taking part in the event. The final outcome willbe included in IB Coordinator Ms. Lynn Park’s article inside.Congratulations, Kirsten and Mateen. We also extend our congratulations to all the ISS musicians whotook part in the Band Concert at school last week—the concertwas remarkable! Early the next morning, our Middle SchoolHonor Choir left for Moscow and the international schoolsmusical festival there. And on the following evening, anotherremarkable sight was the IB Visual Arts class exhibition whichwas staged at Tou Scene in Stavanger. A wonderfully largecrowd attended both events and our students excelled in theartistic spotlight.Coming up soon, you will be receiving a letter in the mailwith full details on your students taking part in the May 17Norwegian Constitution Day parade. Although this year, itfalls on a Sunday, it is a regular school day for us and for yourchildren—although we will only keep them until the end ofthe parade. This year the Children’s Parade (Barnetoget), startsdowntown as normal and winds its way to the ending pointon the corner of Holbergsgaten and Steingata in the Eiganesneighborhood. Full details and a map will be sent through themail to each home in the next week.Last autumn, I promised one of our parents that I would writea bit about some of the other activities that fill out May 17 th sothat parents could think about how to use the day when themorning parade finishes. When the Children’s Parade ends, there is still a whole day filled with activities for you and yourfamily to enjoy. Each family will be sent a brochure that outlinesthe time schedule for the day and what is happening in yourneighborhood. Stavanger Kommune sends us the brochures inthe week leading up the 17 th and we’ll send them home so bewatching for it. Here are some of the Duevel family favorites:--In our neighborhood, as in many others, after the Barnetogetthere is an “everybody join-in-parade” where neighbors andfamilies walk informally behind the local school band usuallyending up at a old folks’ home for the band to serenade theoccupants and then carry on to the local school playground orchurch yard for children’s relay races, games, speeches, moremusic and refreshments.--The next stop for us is always the Russtoget, which is theparade for the red- and blue-suited graduates. You never quiteknow just what you will see, but it is never dull. That paradestarts at the old Viking stadium in Eiganes and heads alongEiganesveien toward the center of Stavanger.--Then on to a wonderful highlight—the international festivalat Bjergsted. Sponsored by International House, this wonderfulwww.isstavanger.nogathering gets bigger and better every year. Food stalls frommany countries provide a great lunch, along with entertainmentfrom around the world. Come hungry!--The third and final parade of the day is the Folketoget orPeople’s Parade. This year, it will start in downtown Stavangerand end up in the Storhaug neighborhood. It is filled withclubs, activities, congregations of every kind—music, color andlots of fun!The above list only touches upon some of the activities—thereare many more, starting at 07.00 and carrying on until late inthe evening. And this year, because the 17 th falls on a Sunday, there will undoubtedly be extra activities as well sponsored bylocal churches. And, of course, each kommune will have its ownspecial blend of events to mark Norway’s Constitution Day.Ask your friends and neighbors how their family spends theday—there are many variations, and nearly each one will befamily-friendly. Dress up—but wear comfortable shoes—andenjoy the fun!On May 18, 19 and 20, we are looking forward to hosting Mr.Andy Hill from the Council of International Schools and Dr.Samuel Robinson from the New England Association of Schoolsand Colleges. They are representing their organizations in thefive-year accreditation visit to the school. What is accreditation? It is. . . “a system of accountability that is ongoing, voluntary, andcomprehensive in scope. It respects differences in institutionalpopulations, missions, and cultures, and fosters institutionalchange grounded in the judgment of practicing educators. It isbased on standards which are developed and regularly reviewedby the members and which define the characteristics of goodschools and colleges.” (NEASC)Our accreditation cycle spans ten years, and includes a full selfstudywhich a visiting team of twelve educators uses as theycome and view every aspect of the school and its operations.Following their visit, they issue recommendations which must beresponded to within one year. At the five year point, the schoolmust submit another report responding to the recommendationsissued earlier and also explaining changes which have occurredand indicating intended future actions. The five year point alsocoincides with a two-person team coming to visit the school. Our five year report has already been sent in and next Mr. Hilland Dr. Robinson will spend three days in the school immersingthemselves and considering how far we have come in our goalsand how we are structuring ourselves to face future goals. Theyare very welcome in our ongoing work to improve what theschool can offer.Springtime in Stavanger!
