From the Director:Previously you have read my description of improvements slatedfor the school’s theatre this summer. By replacing the seats, weaccomplish two goals. First to replace the worn seating, andmore importantly, to install new seats that conform to upgradedsafety regulations to quicken emergency evacuation procedures. The new codes require a “more upright seat” which widens theescape route between rows.Another facility upgrade decision taken by the Board just beforewe started the Easter holiday will have, we believe, a broadimpact on each student in the school on a daily basis—bothfrom the point of safety, but also from the viewpoint of pureenjoyment!A New Playground! As soon as school finishes in June, construction will start onwhat we will expect to be a wonderful new addition to ourfacility. When students come back to school in August, theywill find waiting for them the new ISS Athletic and RecreationalOutdoor Area. Instead of the current playground area, therewill be a new enclosed football field, new basketball court andnew playground equipment. The entire area will be covered inpadded artificial turf, saving countless hours of playsuit washingby our parents and easing the corridor washing tasks for ourcleaning staff.Several months ago the school commissioned a professionalsafety audit of the playground. New EU standards have beenadopted by Norway and we wanted to take a proactive positionon making sure our playground met the new codes. The resultstold us that some changes needed to take place immediately,(and those were completed during the February holiday), andothers would need to be done during the summer. Our taskwas to consider whether we should a) remove all the playgroundequipment, b) provide a “partial facelift” at a substantial cost tomeet the new standards, or c) use the new safety requirements asa catalyst to create a completely new and modern facility. Aftercarefully considering each of the above, the Board decided toseize the opportunity to enact a totally new concept. All of our current playground equipment was purchased here inScandinavia and erected following the requirements at the timeof installation. But as in all things connected with safety, ruleschange and those changes enhance safe use. As an exampleof the new safety codes, I’ll use our swingsets. . . the postssupporting the swings are each 12 cm in diameter. The newcodes require a minimum of 14 cm diameter posts, so they willall need replacement. · The Informer 20 April, 2007The rational for the project has the following purpose and fourmain goals:1. Respond to the recent external safety audit requiring repairand removal of some equipment and surfaces that do notmeet upgraded Norwegian safety standards;2. Provide a long-term solution that will offer a safe andenjoyable environment with equipment and a surface thatmeets safety codes with a 10-year guarantee;A new playground will let kidsof all ages tumble and play safely

ISS Girl Scout Early Bird RegistrationIt’s not too early to start thinking about Girl Scouts for next year!Early-bird registration will be held on:Wednesday, May 2 nd and May 9 h ,from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the lobby.Fall registration will take place at Activity Night in August. But registering early assures your daughter a place in the troop asthere is a limit to how many girls can be in one troop. However, more troops can be added if we have enough volunteers tolead (see information below).Who can be a Girl Scout?Girls with U.S. passports or girls who attend ISS can join our troops. The troop breakdowns are as follows:Daisies – KindergartenBrownies – 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd gradersJuniors – 4 th , 5 th and 6 th gradersCadettes/Studio 2B – 7 th and 8 th gradersSeniors – 9 th grade and upNOTE: I will only register girls from those troops that have leaders. If there are no leaders, then I will refund your money.Currently, there are some leaders for all levels except Seniors. However, we will need more Brownie leaders. We may alsolose some leaders due to transfers over the summer.Who can be a GS Leader?Leading a Girl Scout troop is not hard work … although it does involve doing some advance planning, reading the trainingpacket of information for leaders, and a good dose of patience. What you get in return is immeasurable … the joy ofwatching girls who are excited about learning, the opportunity to see them grow and develop into young ladies, and thechance to take part in lots of fun activities with the girls. If your daughter would like to be a Girl Scout next year, please think seriously about helping. If the idea of leading a troopseems daunting, grab another Mom and you can be co-leaders. GSUSA policy states that a man may be a co-leader, but hemust have a female co-leader. So, if you’re a Dad and would like to help, you may certainly do so! New leader training willbe held in May, so don’t delay in volunteering! How do I register? You will need to fill out a GS form (available at registration or in an envelope posted on the bulletin board outside thekiosk). Also you will need to bring a copy of your daughter’s shot record and NOK 500 for registration fees.If you know you are moving this summer, you may register your daughter anyway. She can take her membership card toyour new location and move right into a troop. Cost for registration for girls who will not be here next year is NOK 100.If you have questions about Girl Scouts, or if you would like to lead a troop, please contact Tresa De La Cruz, at 51 881623 or jerome_tresa@hotmail.com.20 · The Informer 20 April, 2007
