From the Direc<strong>to</strong>r:In many ways, the last week in the his<strong>to</strong>ry of the schoolseems as though we have all been through a crucible ofemotions.The memorial service on Friday, May 27 for StephaneNgueguim was beautiful. . . it was terrible. . . it was alsoterribly beautiful. I doubt that any of us who were inattendance will ever forget the powerful words and thefortitude of Stephane’s father, Marcel, as he spoke <strong>to</strong> us andthen addressed his beloved son. But as I was reminded bythe family when I delivered the film of the service <strong>to</strong> sharewith relatives in Cameroon, we need <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>p crying. Thebest compliment we can pay <strong>to</strong> Stephane is <strong>to</strong> learn fromthe positive example he leaves behind, and move forward.Little Gabriela in pre-school and, little Enzo when he isold enough <strong>to</strong> join our pre-school, should not have <strong>to</strong> dealwith long faces from any of us here at ISS, nor should theirparents. Marcel’s wish was for us <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> celebrateStephane’s life and that is the direction we all now need <strong>to</strong>start moving.I won’t even try <strong>to</strong> thank everyone who played a role in ourcommunity effort <strong>to</strong> deal with the events of the last week.First, because I truly know that no one was looking for anythanks--the outpouring was sincere, generous and selfless.And secondly, while I know many of the contributionsthat were made, I also know that many, many other peoplewere doing things <strong>to</strong> assist in one way or another withoutmy knowledge of who they were or even what was beingdone. And so, I will just issue a collective and heartfeltTHANK YOU <strong>to</strong> one and all. We have always knownthat our ISS school community was a special one and thepast week has only underscored the validity of that fact.And, now I move on <strong>to</strong> other <strong>to</strong>pics. . .This is the last issue of the Informer. Just where the timehas gone, I cannot say, the school year seems <strong>to</strong> havemoved along at warp speed this year. The final days ofthe school year will bring along many activities, whichare mentioned in the upcoming pages. Read on andmark your calendars <strong>to</strong> come and join us. During thefinal weeks of the school year, there is always a wonderfulvariety of events for our families <strong>to</strong> enjoy. Please feel free<strong>to</strong> <strong>take</strong> part and enjoy every aspect of the final weeks—whether it is outside at one of the Field Days, or insideat one of the upcoming assemblies, you are very welcome.We also annually extend a very warm welcome <strong>to</strong> anyonewho wishes <strong>to</strong> attend our Baccalaureate, (Wednesday, June8 at 18:00 here at school), and Graduation, (Thursday, June9, at 19:30 also at ISS), ceremonies.The Baccalaureate gathering is a warm, personal, friendly—and often tear-filled—evening organized by the senior classas a “gift” <strong>to</strong> themselves, their parents and their teachers.The graduation ceremony, which marks the last night asISS students for our 12th grade is a formal ceremony inwww.isstavanger.noour theatre with our seniors and the high school teachersresplendent in their caps and gowns keen <strong>to</strong> accept the ISSdiplomas.This year the commencement address will be delivered byMr. Farouk Al-Kasim. Mr. Al-Kasim is one of the pioneersof the oil industry in Norway and he has much <strong>to</strong> sharewith us. We are very grateful that he will be joining ushere on this special night. Not familiar with his name?Well if you have heard of either the name “Sta<strong>to</strong>il” orthe “Norwegian Oil Direc<strong>to</strong>rate,” then I believe you arevery familiar with the institutions that Mr. Al-Kasim hasbeen instrumental in creating. Following bothceremonies, there will be a reception which participantsare welcome <strong>to</strong> attend.As our annual thank you back <strong>to</strong> the Parent Association,once again the administration invited the outgoing andincoming Parent Association Board members <strong>to</strong> breakfas<strong>to</strong>n Tuesday, May 31 in the cafeteria. In a school thatprospers throughout the year by countless acts of generousvolunteering by a huge number of parents, how best can theadministration thank each individual? We like <strong>to</strong> turn thetables and serve the parents, instead of us always watchingthe reverse in action. This breakfast is a symbolic way forus <strong>to</strong> extend our appreciation <strong>to</strong> each of these individualsand, in a wider sense, <strong>to</strong> all the parents in the school whogive of their time throughout the school year. Thank youfrom all of us here at ISS.Just one of those many acts of kindness that the ParentAssociation has <strong>off</strong>ered the school was a delicious tableof treats that the PA provided as a thank you <strong>to</strong> the staffjust after May 17. A very grateful staff enjoyed both thedelightful tastes of the desserts and the talents of those whoprovided them.On a practical note, are you aware that if your child isleaving the school—either moving or graduating, weare happy <strong>to</strong> refund any unused funds from your schoollunch account. To do this, just contact our receptionist,Ms. Anne Brit Winters. Our assumption is that anyonewho is returning <strong>to</strong> ISS in August does not have a problemin leaving unused funds in their lunch account wherethey can again access them in August with the new yearstarting up. If our assumption is incorrect and you wouldlike the money refunded now in June, that is fine—justcommunicate that information <strong>to</strong> Ms. Winters.On a normal basis, we recommend that during the schoolyear parents check their children’s account about once a week<strong>to</strong> moni<strong>to</strong>r the balances. The financial plan for funding theexpansion is based on 1/3 economic support fromlocal municipalities and the county municipalityand the rest will be covered by the tuition overa seven-year period. A temporary loan may beneeded in certain periods. The financial state of theschool is robust so the expansion of the buildingsis not considered any substantial financial risk.6. News from the Exams Coordina<strong>to</strong>rIB resultsIB students can access their results at http://results.ibo.org from 16:00 Norwegian time on Wednesday 6th July2011. All students have been issued with an alphanumeric personal code and a PIN which allows them <strong>to</strong> access theirown results only, and students should note that the site only allows a limited number of attempts <strong>to</strong> access the site so itis vital NOT <strong>to</strong> try <strong>to</strong> access the site before the designated time, and <strong>to</strong> enter the personal code (which is case sensitive)and PIN absolutely accurately! Any students who have problems with the IBO site can contact me by telephone onWednesday evening only at 51 55 30 54 (from 17:00 <strong>to</strong> 21:00).Students who have questions about their results (who wish <strong>to</strong> query their results, or investigate the possibilityof re<strong>take</strong>s, or who would like the school <strong>to</strong> contact universities about their provisional <strong>off</strong>ers) MUST contactme in school on Thursday 7th July or Friday 8th July between 09:00 and 14:00. Deadlines are very short, and Iwill only be available on those two days <strong>to</strong> arrange the possibility of November re<strong>take</strong>s! After that, I will notbe available until the beginning of August, which is after the deadline for November re<strong>take</strong>s. Diplomas andCertificates are normally mailed <strong>to</strong> the school in late August or early September, and will then be sent by registeredpost <strong>to</strong> the address provided by the student.IGCSE resultsThis year the IGCSE results will be available online through a special website set up by Cambridge InternationalExaminations at https://myresults.cie.org.ukThe results will be available from Thursday 11th August 2011.Parents and students have been sent an information sheet in the mail with details of their username and password,which should be kept confidential and kept in a safe place until August!I will be in school on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th August if there are any urgent questions about the results, andwill also be available once school re-starts on 15th August.Families who are leaving ISS this summer, should remember <strong>to</strong> leave a forwarding address with the High School Office(both an email address AND a mailing address if possible) so that we can send the IGCSE Certificates when theyarrive in September / Oc<strong>to</strong>ber.And finally a message for 11th graders ...It is important that 11th graders think carefully about the best way <strong>to</strong> use their long summer break. Although rest andrelaxation are vital, the holiday gives students the opportunity <strong>to</strong> reinforce their learning from the 11th grade, preparefor 12th grade, and especially <strong>to</strong> work on their Extended Essay. The students who have finished their IB Diploma will,I am sure, support me in this. The IB Diploma is a demanding academic programme, involving commitment andorganisation throughout the two years. H i g h S c h o o l N E W SIt is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I write thislast Informer article for the year. As you are aware oneof our 10th grade students, Stephane Ngueguim passedaway on Friday 20th May. Stephane was kind, intelligent,athletic, funny and a true gentleman. He was always ready<strong>to</strong> share a smile and his positive outlook on life <strong>to</strong>uched allthat came in<strong>to</strong> contact with him.In this way he was a truly remarkable young man and Ido not think he could ever have known what an impacthe has had on us all. I know that I have become a betterperson for having known Stephane and I feel privileged <strong>to</strong>have been his high school principal and I know that thisfeeling is felt by his teachers and class mates.I know that Stephane’s smile and spirit is indelibly markedin our minds and that we will respect his memory byincorporating his zest for life in<strong>to</strong> our daily actions.As I write, there are only just under two weeks left ofthe academic year 2010-2011. The May 17th NorwegianConstitution Day parade is just behind us. I feel proud<strong>to</strong> be part of a celebration of national identity and culturewithout a hint of nationalism or jingoism.Students taking the IB examinations have now finishedtheir last papers and students undertaking their IGCSEexaminations are nearing the end of their assessments thatcontinues until the 9th June.The remainder of the high school body have just startedtheir end of year exams (30th May through <strong>to</strong> the 6th Juneinclusive). We wish all students the very best and hopethat they truly reflect their potential in these assessments.It was great <strong>to</strong> see so many at the middle and high schoolChoir Concert earlier in May and a big thank you <strong>to</strong>Mr Mudra and Ms Cosgriff and all those involved forall the hard work and effort ensuring these events are sosuccessful.Moving on <strong>to</strong> new information, it is the time of year thatsees all of us preparing for transition. If your family’stransition will see you leaving the International Schoolof Stavanger at the end of the year, please do not forget<strong>to</strong> fill out a withdrawal form before leaving. We will need a little time<strong>to</strong> process the records and have them available for you intime for your departure.This is also the time of year when students begin <strong>to</strong>frantically look under beds and behind furniture for allof those things that they have lost during the year. Pleaseremember that all school debts must be paid in full beforewe can release records. This includes, but is not necessarilylimited <strong>to</strong>, the following things:• Lost library and/or classroom books. These will need<strong>to</strong> be paid for in the Business Manager’s <strong>off</strong>ice and thereceipt presented <strong>to</strong> the library or the Middle or HighSchool <strong>off</strong>ice.• Cafeteria accounts. If you are returning, the money inyour account will be waiting for you when you comeback <strong>to</strong> school. Otherwise, you can get a refund ofmoney at the end of school.• Athletic uniforms. We are able <strong>to</strong> continue <strong>to</strong> <strong>off</strong>er Theatre Arts at IBlevel in grade 11 and whilst ITGS and Business Studiescannot be <strong>off</strong>ered as a taught programme at ISS, wehave the facility for students <strong>to</strong> enroll in these courses viaan online programme <strong>off</strong>ered by Pajoma Education (anapproved IBO provider of online courses).Additionally the <strong>take</strong> up of students wanting <strong>to</strong> continue<strong>to</strong> <strong>take</strong> Norwegian as a foreign language has again beenrelatively small but we are continuing <strong>to</strong> look in<strong>to</strong> whetherthis option can be provided as an either inside or outside ofthe school day. I am in the process of writing <strong>to</strong> interestedparents <strong>to</strong> finalize potential numbers. Also for studententering grade 9 here were only a couple of students whorequested <strong>to</strong> do IGSE PE and unfortunately we are not able<strong>to</strong> run this course with such small numbers. H i g h S c h o o l N E W SGroup 4 ProjectOn May 11th all of the students in Grade 11 were involvedin the Group 4 Project, part of the Internal Assessment forthe IB Diploma’s Science subjects.Their challenge was <strong>to</strong> create, calibrate, and use, a timingdevice <strong>to</strong> measure the length of a piece of music whichwould be between 2 and 6 minutes long. They would begiven 3 chances <strong>to</strong> time the piece of music.The project was introduced the previous week in a Sciencelesson, random groups of 3 were assigned and the studentsthen had the week <strong>to</strong> prepare themselves for the actualday of the project. The project only assesses personal skillswithin a group environment.There were two main prizes <strong>to</strong> shoot for - accuracy andcreativity.The day was a great success with the students getting reallyinvolved in the process and the challenge. Approachesranged from programmable robots, music as a timer,oscillating springs, dripping water, reaction rates, viscousflow, <strong>to</strong> outrageous Rube Goldberg/Heath Robinsoncontraptions with just about every variation in between. Inthe end the judges chose 4 approaches for their innovativeapproaches:Creativity:1. A marble run approach – Ben Grimshaw, MartinaAssera<strong>to</strong> & Katerina Jersakova2. A Rube Goldberg/Heath Robinson machine – DaeganElsborg, Giulia Chiandet, Jessica Hatcher3. A clever use of candles and their burn rate – TeymurAbdullaev, Arman Noor, Katrina Levchenko4. H i g h S c h o o l N E W SThe International AwardSilver Expedition QualifierOn the morning of April 29th, 11 students in Grade11 were dropped by minibus close <strong>to</strong> Orrevatnet. Thechallenge was <strong>to</strong> get all of them back <strong>to</strong> school, navigatingtheir way along sections of the coastal path and acrossbeaches with the occasional section on the smaller countrylanes. They had <strong>to</strong> carry all of their camping equipmentand food and stay <strong>to</strong>gether as a team.About 50km and 2 and a half days later, they finally arrivedback at school exhausted and slightly more appreciatingof some of life’s simpler pleasures, a soft bed, food thatthey don’t have <strong>to</strong> spend ages cooking, and no rucksackon their back.The successful students were Pawel Kabulski, LenaHognestad Hjellvik, Robert Schleier, Steven Franckowiak,Daegan Elsborg, Emily Seidel, Teymur Abdullaev andEuan Gordon. James Rennie completed only the firsttwo days because of family commitments and will do hisqualifying walk next year.The students were amazingly lucky with the weather,sleeping on the beach at Vigdel and also along the coastNorth of Tananger.The Award is designed <strong>to</strong> foster independence and <strong>to</strong>challenge students <strong>to</strong> step a little outside their comfortzone and all of the students who completed the walk willhave faced a variety of challenges in getting <strong>to</strong> the end.Here are some of their comments:Worst moments?The worst moment were probably the second day, wheremy legs could hardly hold me up after the long walk. Itwas also pretty bad when Steven got those blisters onhis legs, which I mostly laughed about but I did feel badfor the guy. Carrying my heavy back-pack was horrible!Luckily Mr. Taylor fixed the weight distribution on myback, that made the trip bearable.The worst moment of the Silver Walk was waking up 3www.isstavanger.notimes in the middle of the night half frozen. The secondnight was nice and comfortable though (thanks again, Mr.Taylor).The worst moment was having <strong>to</strong> walk with my ”wounds”.Or putting up with Sir Slimey and his wife constantlyarguing... :)Best moments?The best was probably the whole trip. I had a lot of funwalking <strong>to</strong>gether with best friends and making fun ofEmily for being a walking back-pack. Walking on thebeach with my bare feet made life so much better. Ibasically worshiped the cool water that the waves broughtin. Food also tastes so much better when you feel you havedeserved it.Pretty much everything was really cool but the best partmust’ve been walking across areas without obvious publicpaths because there was a certain degree of uncertainty onwhat was going <strong>to</strong> be around the next corner.The best moment was at the end, taking <strong>off</strong> my bagand sinking in<strong>to</strong> the chair of Lena’s car with a sense ofaccomplishment. (And hunger)What did you learn?I learnt <strong>to</strong> always put on sunscreen, even if I think I won’tget burned. I learned how <strong>to</strong> put a back-pack on properlyand how <strong>to</strong> not make my shoulders and hips hurt. Andnow I’m always gonna put plasters on my feet <strong>to</strong> avoidgetting blisters. And I learnt how <strong>to</strong> not get on people’snerves when they’re tired.I learned <strong>to</strong> bring more warm clothes when you try <strong>to</strong>sleep outside on the beach.
