Tatiisquam Stephane’s vendem. locker.... Iquis decorated et explaborit by his school mates2 · The Informer 1 June <strong>2011</strong> www.isstavanger.no

From <strong>the</strong> Direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r:In many ways, <strong>the</strong> last week in <strong>the</strong> his<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> schoolseems as though we have all been through a crucible <strong>of</strong>emoti<strong>on</strong>s.The memorial service <strong>on</strong> Friday, May 27 for StephaneNgueguim was beautiful. . . it was terrible. . . it was alsoterribly beautiful. I doubt that any <strong>of</strong> us who were inattendance will ever forget <strong>the</strong> powerful words and <strong>the</strong>fortitude <strong>of</strong> Stephane’s fa<strong>the</strong>r, Marcel, as he spoke <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> us and<strong>the</strong>n addressed his beloved s<strong>on</strong>. But as I was reminded by<strong>the</strong> family when I delivered <strong>the</strong> film <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> service <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> sharewith relatives in Camero<strong>on</strong>, we need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>p crying. Thebest compliment we can pay <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Stephane is <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> learn from<strong>the</strong> positive example he leaves behind, and move forward.Little Gabriela in pre-school and, little Enzo when he isold enough <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> join our pre-school, should not have <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> dealwith l<strong>on</strong>g faces from any <strong>of</strong> us here at ISS, nor should <strong>the</strong>irparents. Marcel’s wish was for us <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> celebrateStephane’s life and that is <strong>the</strong> directi<strong>on</strong> we all now need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>start moving.I w<strong>on</strong>’t even try <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> thank every<strong>on</strong>e who played a role in ourcommunity effort <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> deal with <strong>the</strong> events <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last week.First, because I truly know that no <strong>on</strong>e was looking for anythanks--<strong>the</strong> outpouring was sincere, generous and selfless. And sec<strong>on</strong>dly, while I know many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>sthat were made, I also know that many, many o<strong>the</strong>r peoplewere doing things <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> assist in <strong>on</strong>e way or ano<strong>the</strong>r withoutmy knowledge <strong>of</strong> who <strong>the</strong>y were or even what was beingd<strong>on</strong>e. And so, I will just issue a collective and heartfeltTHANK YOU <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e and all. We have always knownthat our ISS school community was a special <strong>on</strong>e and <strong>the</strong>past week has <strong>on</strong>ly underscored <strong>the</strong> validity <strong>of</strong> that fact. And, now I move <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<strong>the</strong>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>pics. . .This is <strong>the</strong> last issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Informer. Just where <strong>the</strong> timehas g<strong>on</strong>e, I cannot say, <strong>the</strong> school year seems <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> havemoved al<strong>on</strong>g at warp speed this year. The final days <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> school year will bring al<strong>on</strong>g many activities, whichare menti<strong>on</strong>ed in <strong>the</strong> upcoming pages. Read <strong>on</strong> andmark your calendars <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> come and join us. During <strong>the</strong>final weeks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school year, <strong>the</strong>re is always a w<strong>on</strong>derfulvariety <strong>of</strong> events for our families <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> enjoy. Please feel free<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>take</str<strong>on</strong>g> part and enjoy every aspect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> final weeks—whe<strong>the</strong>r it is outside at <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Field Days, or insideat <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> upcoming assemblies, you are very welcome. We also annually extend a very warm welcome <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> any<strong>on</strong>ewho wishes <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> attend our Baccalaureate, (Wednesday, June8 at 18:00 here at school), and Graduati<strong>on</strong>, (Thursday, June9, at 19:30 also at ISS), cerem<strong>on</strong>ies.The Baccalaureate ga<strong>the</strong>ring is a warm, pers<strong>on</strong>al, friendly—and <strong>of</strong>ten tear-filled—evening organized by <strong>the</strong> senior classas a “gift” <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong>mselves, <strong>the</strong>ir parents and <strong>the</strong>ir teachers. The graduati<strong>on</strong> cerem<strong>on</strong>y, which marks <strong>the</strong> last night asISS students for our 12th grade is a formal cerem<strong>on</strong>y inwww.isstavanger.noour <strong>the</strong>atre with our seniors and <strong>the</strong> high school teachersresplendent in <strong>the</strong>ir caps and gowns keen <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> accept <strong>the</strong> ISSdiplomas. This year <strong>the</strong> commencement address will be delivered byMr. Farouk Al-Kasim. Mr. Al-Kasim is <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pi<strong>on</strong>eers<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oil industry in Norway and he has much <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> sharewith us. We are very grateful that he will be joining ushere <strong>on</strong> this special night. Not familiar with his name?Well if you have heard <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> name “Sta<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>il” or<strong>the</strong> “Norwegian Oil Direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rate,” <strong>the</strong>n I believe you arevery familiar with <strong>the</strong> instituti<strong>on</strong>s that Mr. Al-Kasim hasbeen instrumental in creating. In a school thatprospers throughout <strong>the</strong> year by countless acts <strong>of</strong> generousvolunteering by a huge number <strong>of</strong> parents, how best can <strong>the</strong>administrati<strong>on</strong> thank each individual? We like <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> turn <strong>the</strong>tables and serve <strong>the</strong> parents, instead <strong>of</strong> us always watching<strong>the</strong> reverse in acti<strong>on</strong>. This breakfast is a symbolic way forus <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> extend our appreciati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se individualsand, in a wider sense, <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> all <strong>the</strong> parents in <strong>the</strong> school whogive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir time throughout <strong>the</strong> school year. Although rest andrelaxati<strong>on</strong> are vital, <strong>the</strong> holiday gives students <strong>the</strong> opportunity <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> reinforce <strong>the</strong>ir learning from <strong>the</strong> 11th grade, preparefor 12th grade, and especially <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> work <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Extended Essay. The students who have finished <strong>the</strong>ir IB Diploma will,I am sure, support me in this. The IB Diploma is a demanding academic programme, involving commitment andorganisati<strong>on</strong> throughout <strong>the</strong> two years. H i g h S c h o o l N E W SIt is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I write thislast Informer article for <strong>the</strong> year. As you are aware <strong>on</strong>e<strong>of</strong> our 10th grade students, Stephane Ngueguim passedaway <strong>on</strong> Friday 20th May. Stephane was kind, intelligent, athletic, funny and a true gentleman. He was always ready<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> share a smile and his positive outlook <strong>on</strong> life <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>uched allthat came in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tact with him.In this way he was a truly remarkable young man and Ido not think he could ever have known what an impac<strong>the</strong> has had <strong>on</strong> us all. They had <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> carry all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir camping equipmentand food and stay <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge<strong>the</strong>r as a team.About 50km and 2 and a half days later, <strong>the</strong>y finally arrivedback at school exhausted and slightly more appreciating<strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> life’s simpler pleasures, a s<strong>of</strong>t bed, food that<strong>the</strong>y d<strong>on</strong>’t have <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> spend ages cooking, and no rucksack<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir back. The successful students were Pawel Kabulski, LenaHognestad Hjellvik, Robert Schleier, Steven Franckowiak,Daegan Elsborg, Emily Seidel, Teymur Abdullaev andEuan Gord<strong>on</strong>. James Rennie completed <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> firsttwo days because <strong>of</strong> family commitments and will do hisqualifying walk next year. The students were amazingly lucky with <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r,sleeping <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> beach at Vigdel and also al<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> coastNorth <strong>of</strong> Tananger. The Award is designed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> foster independence and <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>challenge students <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> step a little outside <strong>the</strong>ir comfortz<strong>on</strong>e and all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> students who completed <strong>the</strong> walk willhave faced a variety <strong>of</strong> challenges in getting <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> end. Here are some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir comments:Worst moments? The worst moment were probably <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d day, wheremy legs could hardly hold me up after <strong>the</strong> l<strong>on</strong>g walk. Itwas also pretty bad when Steven got those blisters <strong>on</strong>his legs, which I mostly laughed about but I did feel badfor <strong>the</strong> guy. Carrying my heavy back-pack was horrible!Luckily Mr. Taylor fixed <strong>the</strong> weight distributi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> myback, that made <strong>the</strong> trip bearable. The worst moment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Silver Walk was waking up 3www.isstavanger.notimes in <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> night half frozen. The sec<strong>on</strong>dnight was nice and comfortable though (thanks again, Mr.Taylor).The worst moment was having <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> walk with my ”wounds”.Or putting up with Sir Slimey and his wife c<strong>on</strong>stantlyarguing... :)Best moments? The best was probably <strong>the</strong> whole trip. I had a lot <strong>of</strong> funwalking <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ge<strong>the</strong>r with best friends and making fun <strong>of</strong>Emily for being a walking back-pack. Walking <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>beach with my bare feet made life so much better. Ibasically worshiped <strong>the</strong> cool water that <strong>the</strong> waves broughtin. Food also tastes so much better when you feel you havedeserved it.Pretty much everything was really cool but <strong>the</strong> best partmust’ve been walking across areas without obvious publicpaths because <strong>the</strong>re was a certain degree <strong>of</strong> uncertainty <strong>on</strong>what was going <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be around <strong>the</strong> next corner. The best moment was at <strong>the</strong> end, taking <str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>of</strong>f</str<strong>on</strong>g> my bagand sinking in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> chair <strong>of</strong> Lena’s car with a sense <strong>of</strong>accomplishment. (And hunger)What did you learn?I learnt <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> always put <strong>on</strong> sunscreen, even if I think I w<strong>on</strong>’tget burned. I learned how <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> put a back-pack <strong>on</strong> properlyand how <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> not make my shoulders and hips hurt. Andnow I’m always g<strong>on</strong>na put plasters <strong>on</strong> my feet <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> avoidgetting blisters. And I learnt how <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> not get <strong>on</strong> people’snerves when <strong>the</strong>y’re tired.I learned <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> bring more warm clo<strong>the</strong>s when you try <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>sleep outside <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> beach. I also learned <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> bring some <strong>of</strong>my own sun-cream.I learned that tight boxers are <strong>the</strong> way <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> go.The Informer 1 June <strong>2011</strong> · 19
