Middle <strong>School</strong> News and EventsWelcome to 4th quarter! Here is an update on some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>activities and events that have taken place recently and somethat will be happening soon.Recently, we celebrated all <strong>the</strong> achievements and events from3rd quarter at our Recognition Ceremony (April 16th). Thisevent began with an unforgettable piece <strong>of</strong> ‘Arabian Nights’entertainment from <strong>the</strong> Middle <strong>School</strong> staff! This was a tributefrom <strong>the</strong> staff to <strong>the</strong> students for all <strong>the</strong> hard work <strong>the</strong>y had putinto making <strong>the</strong> Middle <strong>School</strong> musical ano<strong>the</strong>r great success.I understand that it was hilarious to watch! Thank you middleschool students for a memorable musical this year and thank youmiddle school staff for being so willing to be foolish!Congratulations to Lydia Wonham (6th grade) for her memorableguitar performance at this ceremony. She dazzled us with hertalent, poise and <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> her performance. Our ceremony for Q4 will take place on <strong>the</strong> lastday <strong>of</strong> school (June 4th) starting at 9:45am. This ceremony willinclude a picture slide show from <strong>the</strong> entire year. All parents arewelcome to come along and celebrate <strong>the</strong> year with us!Dr o p Ev e r y t h i n g And Re a d DayLast Friday, <strong>the</strong> Middle <strong>School</strong> changed <strong>the</strong> schedule andorganized a day around reading and various activities associatedwith reading. It was a wonderful fun-filled day and <strong>the</strong> studentsand teachers enjoyed activities very much. Particular thanksgo to Ms Lakin-Miller for all her hard work and organizationaround this event.Ho m e r o o m<strong>The</strong> advisory <strong>the</strong>me for April and May is ‘Coping withChange and Transitions’. Every middle school student will beexperiencing some form <strong>of</strong> change in <strong>the</strong> next few weeks: gradeto grade, Middle <strong>School</strong> to High <strong>School</strong>, moving schools and/or saying goodbye to friends. All students will be given <strong>the</strong>opportunity to discuss <strong>the</strong>ir feelings at this emotional time andbe given strategies to help <strong>the</strong>m cope with <strong>the</strong>ir feelings.In addition, <strong>the</strong> 8th grade students have been involved in anintensive ‘study skills’ course for four homeroom periods perweek, in preparation for <strong>the</strong>ir 8th grade exams at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> thisweek (April 28th and 29th and May 4th and 5th.)<strong>The</strong>se study sessions have included:• How I study and how I study best.• Following written directions.• Test-taking skills and tips.• Preparing for objective questions.• Memorization skills.• Preparing for essay questions.5t h t o 6t h g r a d e Tr a n s i t i o n<strong>The</strong> 5th grade students will be visiting <strong>the</strong> 6th grade homeroomin <strong>the</strong> near future. This is part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> transition for <strong>the</strong>5th grade into <strong>the</strong> 6th grade and <strong>the</strong> Middle <strong>School</strong>. <strong>The</strong> 5thgrade students will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to be in <strong>the</strong> Middle<strong>School</strong> hallways and will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to ask <strong>the</strong> current6th grade some questions.Parent meeting for <strong>the</strong> 5th – 6th grade transition will take placeon Wednesday, May 13th at 7pm.12 · <strong>The</strong> In f o r m e r 29 Ap r i l 2009 www.isstavanger.no
