Total <strong>losses</strong> at producers level 86.90 3.81As stated earlier, the study <strong>of</strong> <strong>post</strong>-<strong>harvest</strong> <strong>losses</strong> had been conf<strong>in</strong>ed to the <strong>losses</strong> at the producers’level, stretch<strong>in</strong>g from transport from the field after <strong>harvest</strong> to the thresh<strong>in</strong>g floor, <strong>and</strong> thereafter uptostorage at producers level <strong>and</strong> not beyond that. The study did not cover the <strong>losses</strong> <strong>in</strong> transport fromthe farmer’s storage to market for sale, <strong>in</strong> the market <strong>and</strong> thereafter <strong>in</strong> the process <strong>of</strong> distribution. Thetotal <strong>post</strong> <strong>harvest</strong> <strong>losses</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ragi at producers’ level, as depicted <strong>in</strong> Table above, were estimated at3.81 percent <strong>of</strong> the production.6.1.2 A reference to Annexure XXIV shows that the <strong>losses</strong> <strong>in</strong> thresh<strong>in</strong>g by mechanical means amounted to1.13 thous<strong>and</strong> tonnes (0.05percent <strong>of</strong> production), by animal power to 9.86 thous<strong>and</strong> tonnes <strong>and</strong> bymanual means to 6.53 thous<strong>and</strong> tonnes.6.1.3 In w<strong>in</strong>now<strong>in</strong>g, the total loss <strong>of</strong> Ragi was estimated at 17.43 thous<strong>and</strong> tonnes (0.76 percent) <strong>of</strong>production – Annexure XXV.6.1.4 In transport at farm level, it is observed that the <strong>losses</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ragi <strong>in</strong> transport from field to thresh<strong>in</strong>gfloor amounted to 14.10 thous<strong>and</strong> tonnes <strong>of</strong> total production or 0.62 percent by various modes <strong>of</strong>transport used (Annexures XXVII & XXVIII).
