For some college students, such as freshmenliving in residence halls, there is an increased risk of meningococcaldisease. According to the American College Health Association, between 100 and 125 cases of meningococcal disease occur oncollege campuses every year in the United States; between fiveand 15 college students die each year as a result of infection.Currently, no data is available regarding whether schools are at thesame increased risk for disease. However, these children can be insettings similar to college freshmen living in residence halls. Otherpersons at increased risk include household contacts of a personknown to have had this disease and people traveling to parts of theworld where meningitis is prevalent. How Is the Meningococcus Germ Spread? The meningococcus germ is spread by direct close contact withnose or throat discharges of an infected person. Many people carrythis particular germ in their nose and throat without any signs ofillness, while others may develop serious symptoms. What Are the Symptoms?High fever, headache, vomiting, stiff neck and a rash are symptomsof meningococcal disease.Among people who develop meningococcal disease, 10 to 15percent die in spite of treatment with antibiotics. Of those who live, permanent brain damage, hearing loss, kidney failure, loss of armsor legs or chronic nervous system problems can occur. How Soon Do Symptoms Appear? The symptoms may appear two to 10 days after exposure, butusually within five days. What Is the Treatment for Meningococcal Disease?Antibiotics, such as penicillin G or Ceftriaxone, can be used to treatpeople with meningococcal disease. Is There a Vaccine to Prevent Meningococcal Meningitis?Yes, a safe and effective vaccine is available. The vaccine is 85 to100 percent effective in preventing four kinds of bacteria (serogroupsA, C, Y, W-135) that cause about 70 percent of the disease in theUnited States. The vaccine is safe, with mild and infrequent side22 g New Student Handbook 2014

You can visit students.adelphi.edu/sa/rlh or call516.877.3650, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.New students move into residence halls on Monday,September 1 (Labor Day), from 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. and5:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.Packing TipsAs you prepare to move into your room, it’s hard to know exactlywhat to bring with you. Aside from the basics, how can you cramthe rest of your life into a room? Here is some advice that pastAdelphi students found useful.1. The University won’t hold packages, so if you decide to shipitems to campus, make sure that they arrive after you get toyour residence hall. To make sure that your items get to you, include the following information:Adelphi UniversityYour NameYour Residence Hall/Your Room NumberOne South AvenueP.O. Box 701Garden City, NY 11530-0701adelphi.edu g 31

2. Make a list of things to bring. For some packing suggestions, check out the list on this page. Be sure to revise and add to itas you pack. Save a copy of your list to help you pack for yoursophomore, junior and senior years.3. Don’t stress if you get to Adelphi and realize you’ve leftsomething at home. If you’re coming from far away, thinkabout waiting to buy some things until you get here. Thecampus is near several large malls and shopping plazas, andthe bookstore in the UC also sells items for your room.4. Pack your stuff in containers that you can use around yourroom. A trunk makes a great coffee table or place to put yourstereo or television. Colorful plastic crates can hold your booksand clothes.5. Consider packing your linens in duffle or even trash bags, which are easy to store in your room.6. Talk to your roommate(s) before you get here. Not only is thisa great way to get in touch with another student before thesemester starts, but it’s a good way to avoid crowding yourroom with duplicate items.7. Since there is no on-campus storage space, you might wantto consider packing for one season at a time. If you don’t livethat far from campus, you can pick up and drop off thingsthroughout the year. If you live far away, you can ship homeyour winter items and have your spring/summer items shippedto you.FAQ:When will I know my room assignment and my roommates? You’ll receive an email with this information. After Orientationand after you’ve set up your Adelphi student ID number, checkout additional information about residential life at ecampus.adelphi.edu (see page 45).What to BringIn addition to the items you know to bring, like clothes, toiletries, cellphone and money, here is a list of frequently forgotten items.Things You May Wish to Bring1.
