From Your Handicap CommitteeContrary to urban legend, you don’t need to keep score or maintain a handicap. At least, not unless you wantto play in club events or work on your game and monitor your progress. Even if your goal is to play fun eventswith friends and family, a handicap is one of golf’s unique benefits that enables golfers of different levels tohave a meaningful measure of who played their best game that day.But there is a price to pay for this benefit: you need to keep score of every game, home or away, and post itpromptly. “Away” includes games played during the winter if the course is playing an active season. Belongingto a Club provides you with access to knowledgeable golf professionals that can assist you in recordingyour handicap, whether it’s an issue with rules or with the computer.Golf is a game of honor. Handicaps are an all or nothing decision: every game, according to the rules of golf orno handicap. Any Club event that requires a handicap must be played with a valid up to date one in fairness toyour fellow players.Tuum est. (It’s up to you.)Rule of the Month: Addressing the BallOne of the principal changes introduced as of January 1, 2012 is the amending of the Definition for addressingthe ball. A player has addressed the ball simply by grounding his club immediately in front of or behind theball, regardless of whether or not he has taken his stance.Keep in mind that this definition refers to a ball that is in play. A ball is in play when the player has made astroke on the teeing ground. What if you have teed up your ball, you rest your club on the ground behind yourball and your ball falls off the tee?
