Baltimore-Washington Parkway Widening Feasibility StudyAlternatives Definition3.2.1OutsideWidening3.2.1.1NPSOutsideWideningOptionThe NPS Outside Widening Option replaces the existing right shoulder and curb with a new 12-foot laneand an 8-foot shoulder to the face-of-curb and gutter. The existing 3-foot left shoulder with curb andgutter is not modified. The resulting configuration is an existing curb and 3-foot shoulder on the leftwith three 12-foot-wide travel lanes and an 8-foot-wide shoulder, including curb and gutter on the rightfor both the northbound and southbound parkway that meets NPS design guidelines. Additionally, the existing left shoulder and curb isreplaced with a 10-foot-wide paved shoulder. The resulting configuration is a 10-foot-wide shoulder onthe left with three 12-foot-wide travel lanes and a 10-foot-wide shoulder on the right for both thenorthbound and southbound parkway that meets AASHTO/SHA design guidelines.
