SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORTPeople believe that the SocialCommittee consists of a group offun-loving, carefree students intenton obtaining an abundant supply offrivolity for themselves. This is theaim of the social committee, inregard to supplying recreation andenjoyment for the student body.Though we commenced the yearhappily enough, after planningmonthly entertainment on a limitedbudget, we confess to having becomebustlers, worriers, and occasionallyfrustrated neurotics. An inadequate supply of moneywas the first of the worrying circumstanceswe encountered, butthis cross fell on the shoulders ofour conscientious treasurer, PeterSalmon. The Poverty Dance, with newspapersand old rags adorning thewalls of the Common Room, wasarranged to overcome the lack offunds.Another occasion was the HawaiianDance - or was it before thePoverty Dance? Well, the timeplacement is not really important. The important results were thedoctors' bills we had to pay for, blocked nasal passages due to the"artificial sand," not to speak of thebikini that had to be replaced fora second-year hostel student."Let's have a picnic. All those infavbi.lr-against-.:...:carrteaT" -Tnat'sall there 'is to it. It's suggested anddecided upon. Next comes thediscussion on the picnic. Will wehave it at Long Island or Seaford? Thanks, Mrs. McMahon, we knewyou'd offer. Who'll be ticket secretary?Who'll do the publicity? Thanks, hostel students, you'vejust been nominated. With all theseproblems and questions solved, three buses (four people in the thirdbus) left on Sunday, April 1, forCowes. The height of the social life atF.T.C. was reached in June whenthe majority of the students andstaff tripped the light fantastic atthe St. Kilda Town Hall. This yearit was done amid a flurry of balloonsand streamers, indicating aCarousel theme. To this functionmust be attributed the mentalbreakdowns of all the committeeand its staff representatives, Mrs.McMahon and Mr. Chalmers. Thanks are extended to these twopeople who gave me personally, and the committee, such tremendoushelp. The gathering of nimbus cloudsindicated the coming of the snowseason, and the students of F.T.C.were not to be denied the excitementand glamour of frozen fingers, wet clothes and double pneumonia. Thus two bus-loads left one Sundayin August for the slushing slopesof Donna Buang.Perhaps an encouraging featureof the year's social activities wasthe "Wild West" night - a casualaancc witfi " a-- Western flavo· ·· ~=r, "· -....-----which was organized and runwholly by the first-year representativeson the Social Committee.- Michael Burke.Page SeventySTRUAN, 1962
