V.T.V. (COLLEGE BRANCH)As Council representative for theCollege this year perhaps my greatestproblem was actually interestingthe student body in Unionaffairs, and in making them awareof the fact that deci sions made byCouncil can have a marked effecton the Victorian teaching service,of which they are a part. On Councilit wa s very easy for me to gaina knowledge of th e sign ificance ofmany of the decisions made, butthe hardest task was to convey thi ssa me impression to the studentbody.I thin k that earlier this yearduringthe drive for salary increase s- Un ion feelin g in the Collegewas, naturally enough, at its height.I feel th at the students themselves,th e Victorian public, and all Unionmem bers, were gratified to see thefirm and clear-minded stand madeby students on an issue whichaffected them deeply. O ne felt thatpeople realized the moral obligationof the community towards theteachers of its future citizens. Somepeople, however, from both withoutand within the Union, condemnedthe Union's handling of this vitalissue. It has often been said wewe re far too long in getting ourincrement. Before one adopts thispoint of view , however , one shouldremem ber that th e V.T.U . is no tonlyan,Tii1ermecff'ary 'body betweenYihorian ';!teachers and the Departs$'l ,;. _;_- ' ~ :& __~ ~me nt, out"'also a body which has(ledisated " ~ itself to the improvement~qf.a ll tfa£,~~ts of the teaching professian. Thus we have not only ourown conditions to take into acco unt,but also public feeling towards ourprofession, and the welfare of thechildren we teach. Because of thesefurther ideals there are manyavenues of attack, such as a generalstrike, which the V.T.U . do es notfeel is open to it. Under these veryheavy restrictions I feel th at theUnion did a very credita ble job ingaining our substantial increment insalary , esp ecially with the Tribunalfeeling as it was .Finally, I sho uld like to congratulate Robyn Willmott on th every ca pa ble job she did as ourPresident this year, and to thankMr. Brown for the willing way inwh ic:' he helped and adv ised usduring the year.- J.
