Usually the firstappointment is kept and is enjoyedby both parties, but subsequentvisits just aren't made. There areoften excellent reasons why theinitial effort cannot be sustained.Not uncommonly College workbecomes a more urgent matter atthe tim e social service work has tobe done, than it was when thedecision to help was first made.In spite of many difficulties somestudents have done valuable socialserv ice work. The Social ServiceCommittee comprising one memberfrom each College group, anddirected by Bob McDonald hasbeen able at times to co-ordinatesocial service work, thus making itmore effective th an it would havebeen had it been done solely at aCollege group level.College groups have assistedMenzies Boys' Home, The Brotherhoodof St. L<strong>au</strong>rence, St. John ofGod Training Centre for MentallyRetarded Children, Ormond SpecialSchool, Peninsula Retarded Children'sCentre, Berry Street FoundlingHome, The Victorian Children'sAid Society, The MelbourneHome and Ho spital for the Aged,The Andrew Kerr Home, Mornington,pensioners, Red Cross andLegacy, aborigines.In addition to personal service,___.....""".s tude"tS;: · aa~~ass i~d~fiIlan ci a lly......Legacy, 'T he State School Clothing~iiR e li e f Committee, and AboriginalChildre,!1's Holiday Fund.Funds collected at staff-studentlunch-time matches, penny drives,and other money raising efforts willbe disbursed at the end of the year.Are we doing enough? Theanswer is - No. It is doubtful ifwe are doing nearly as much as wecan rea sonably manage.Quite apart from increasing ourpersonal service to the communityit would be a very fine thing for theCollege to make available for socialservice a percentage of net proceedsfrom all College functions. Inthis way worthwhile contributionscould be made to needy people inour community.
