The lawyer is alwayscurious about noteworthy or educational ideas; the industrialistis most interested in what the pr<strong>of</strong>essor says about thepractical implementation <strong>of</strong> his work; the refined host is nauseatedby the description <strong>of</strong> the illness and his digestion is upset.But the most pr<strong>of</strong>ound reaction is experienced by the hostess.She had tried at the beginning, unsuccessfully, to channelthe pr<strong>of</strong>essor's long monologue into a different direction.Eventually, unable to follow the conversation, she gave up.She cannot comprehend such conversation and finds itvaguely <strong>of</strong>fensive. Her happy face has fallen, her eyelids areheavy and she is bored to death. Only at the end <strong>of</strong> the party,showing <strong>of</strong>f her home and children to the industrialist's wife,does she regain her lively nature and happy disposition.
