VRIOGS 002.1 Revision A 419.7 PLATFORM SURFACES AND DRAINAGEAll platform surfaces shall meet the following design and engineering requirements:9.7.1 Slip ResistanceAll ground surfaces (TGSIs, asphalt, concrete, tiles, paving, pit lids, grates, markings, etc) shall be slip resistant in both wet and dry conditions as set out in the relevant slipresistant standards – AS4586 - Slip resistance classification of new pedestrian surfacematerials, AS4663 - Slip resistance measurement of existing pedestrian surfaces andHB197 - An introductory guide to the slip resistance of pedestrian surface material. They shall be designed to a minimum rating of R10 as outlined in AS4586;9.7.2 Gradients and CrossfallGradients and crossfalls for floor surfaces in platform pedestrian areas shall comply withthe DSAPT and DOT policy as outlined below. The crossfall on platforms is to lead away from the platform edge 19 with the gradienthaving a minimum of 1:100 and a maximum of 1:40 20 . This gradient shall be consistentto prevent water collecting on the platform surface.9.7.3 DrainagePlatform drainage construction elements shall meet the following design and engineeringrequirements:a) Surfaces shall be free draining;b) Single face platforms shall have drainage points located at the rear of the platformin sufficient numbers to prevent water collecting on the platform and/or overflowingfrom the rear of the platform;c) Island platforms shall have drainage points located in the centre of the platform insufficient numbers to prevent water collecting on the platform;d) Surface water on the platform shall be directed away from station buildingentrances/exits so as not to allow the flow of water to enter or pool at theselocations;e) All platform design shall incorporate overflow prevention in such a manner thatwater does not discharge onto the track.9.7.4 GratesGrates when located in a walking surface, shall meet the following engineering and designrequirements:a) Circular openings shall not be greater than 13mm in diameter 21 ;b) Slotted openings shall not be greater than 13mm wide and not more then 150mmlong and be oriented so that the long dimension is transverse to the dominantdirection of travel; 21c) Grates shall be clipped into position.19 DOT Policy20 DSAPT Part 2 Access Path21 DSAPT Clause 10 SurfacesNOTE: This document is controlled only when viewed on the DOT Engineering Standards website.
