WISCOMBE AWAITS YOU!“Times is ‘ard and friends is few” so the saying goes. There’s no denyingthat the first part is true with petrol & diesel prices at record highs &prices rising faster than one of Darren’s lifts. I’m not so sure about the secondpart though, in fact I’m rather hoping that it’s not true at all.A couple of weeks ago I saw something extremely rare, Andy Pearcelooking embarrassed!!!! We were at a Five Clubs Wiscombe meeting & thelack of marshals from Plymouth was mentioned, which was the cause of theaforementioned embarrassed look. To be fair, it wasn’t just Plymouth thathad failed to supply marshals for the event last year but the other club(begins with a “B” in case you want to know) concerned can go & sort theirown life out…..As part of the “Five Clubs” partnership, our primary task is to supplysufficient marshals to run the bottom paddock. Not an onerous task really, 3or 4 people are quite sufficient. In fact 2 people, John Sluman & DebbieLocke managed admirably last year. So this year we are looking to at leastdouble our marshalling force, preferably without calling on the efforts of lastyear’s marshals. So come on then, don’t be shy, stand up & be counted. Wiscombe issituated 5 miles South of Honiton, a comfortable one hour drive from Plymouth– the same sort of time it takes to get to Werrington, but a bit furtherin terms of distance. When you get there, a warm (well usually) welcomeawaits you. You even get to drive down the complete hill to get to the paddock- you don’t get that at Werrington , do you! For those who can rememberNational A Top 12 runoffs, Dick Mayo, & very late finishes and haven’tbeen back since, Dick passed away several years ago & the new Clerkingteam are rather less grumpy – in fact more like a bunch of clowns really.Sorry Andy!!!In fact, you’ll get a free lunch & you’re very likely to get a bag ofchocolates to munch on if you stay till mid afternoon, & I can guaranteechocolate buns or cake to all Plymouth marshals on both days. Just go & seeLinda in the results caravan & say I sent you!!!!!Going back to the first part of my opening statement, I’m sure that theclub will be providing some financial assistance to those who come along tomarshal, see next month’s Competition Secretary report for more details. Ifthese aren’t forthcoming next month, I’ll spill the beans the month after. Goon Andy, get your cheque book out!!!!For more information & to volunteer your services, contact eitherAndy Pearce on 01752 335423 or me on 01752 342741.See you there.August 2008 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 21
